I was just told today by my obgyn that the patch is much less sensitive to antibiotics than oral contraceptives. Oral contraceptives require good bacteria in the gut to break the bond that releases the medication - and when you are on antibiotics you have less bacteria in your digestive tract.

Because the patch isn't susceptible to this, it's interaction with antibiotics is thought to be less of a concern than with oral contraceptives.

Almost all antibiotics will affect the enzymes in your liver which process the hormones from your pill or patch, meaning that it isn't metabolised properly so isn't effective at preventing pregnancy.

Whenever you take antibiotics you need to use a backup form of contraception (such as condoms) while you are taking the antibiotics and for seven days of active contraceptive medication after the last of the antibiotics. It's up to you to remember this, don't wait for the doctor to tell you about it.

Just being sick can mean that your period is a bit screwy.

Yes many antibiotics, especially doxycycline b/c it's a tetracycline, can interfere w/ teh absorption of the hormones. You need to use a backup method if you go on antibiotics. I used to be on doxycycline for acne & my gyne took me off it when i started the pill.
