I've heard something along the lines of most pills "trick your body" into thinking it's on its period for 3 weeks, then when you remove the hormones, it realizes it's not. I have no idea if that's true, it probably sounds silly.

But most birth control is essentially a controlled amount of hormones, administered into your body, that prevents you from either: a) ovulating, preventing the possibility of fertilization OR b) allowing sperm to penetrate the uterus, by thickening cervical mucus. Some methods may thin out or otherwise alter the lining of the uterus, which makes it more difficult for a fertilized egg to implant itself. There are other methods that do not use hormones, as well.

There are different reasons why women go on it. It may be simply for contraception, to prevent pregnancy. It may be to lessen symptoms of PMS or menstruation. Most women experience milder (if any) symptoms when on the pill. Like me! :) It usually makes periods lighter, shorter, and/or more predictable. There are lots of other reasons too. But you should always remember that it provides ZERO protection against STDs!

Personally, B.C. has been a lifesaver for me. If you can be responsible with it, I'd say it's a great thing to use!

regulates your period, prevents pregnancy, helps ovarian cysts.

It regulates your period so you can time when your ovulating, it also helps to stop cramps sometimes.

Some pills do different things. if you think your going to go on the pill, than just ask your doctor what would be the best for you.

hint the name birth control.....prevents births....it stops the releasing of an egg and makes u infertile...or so i have been told

I would like to tell you all of these answers are incorrect. What Birth Control Pills really do is remove the layers of blood and nutrients in your vagina where the baby can be developed. Thus, making it *Nearly* impossible to become impregnated. But, keep in mind, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's) CAN still be acquired!

stops you body from producing eggs i think. Plus regulates your periods. I used it for 5 years as a teenager.

It mainly allows the man you're with to be like an unbridled horse, or a pig.

It allows him to be irresponsible and to not have a lot of concern for you as a person, or your needs. And it enables you to cater to this beast.
