Very personal question! Girls ONLY!!! Plz help!?!

Question: Ok first, I really appreciate you helping but this is very private so . . . yea it's kinda strange to tell lol.
I'm thirteen and I "started" about half a year ago. I wear pads but one of my best friends is a little younger than me and she doesn't even know I started yet. Any ways, every summer we swim like every other night together and I don't want to have to stop swimming cuz I don't know how to wear a tampon. I bought some and tried to put it in but it really hurt and felt sooo weird! I tried OB the first time - the most painful ever!!! And then I used Playtex Gentle Glide. It's so silky and should "glide" right in, but still yet it hurt. Plz help me cuz I HATE pads! They're so weird and feel weird. The best answer gets ten points and will be very appreciated! Thanx so much! : )
p.s. plz don't say you're not doing it right cuz I read the instructions and I know I was applying it in right. It just hurts really bad. Thanx!

Seems you're only 13 i am assuming (and hoping) you are still a virgin?

If this is the case, you will have a small piece of skin called the 'hymen' at the entry to your vagina.

When you have sex for the first time, this piece of skin breaks... which is what makes losing your virginity so painful...

Anyway, the point is is that inserting anything into your vagina while the hymen is still intact will hurt. Even a small tampon.

Either wait until you're older to use tampons, or you can see a doctor about getting the hymen removed.

EDIT:
do NOT listen to the person above me.
NEVER put vaseline or any other oil based lubricant in or around your vagina as it causes infection.

only ever use lubricants specifically designed for those areas, such as K Y Jelly and other water based lubricants.

also, putting lubricant on a tampon will effect the quality of absorbsion the tampon will have.

Ok, you are doing it right, but tampons take some getting used to.

the thing is you are abit young to be doing this with them yet. that is why your mom maybe didn't tell you. its about 16 before you should even try to use them i know pads are horrible and i knew that also but take care.

Well try the ultra light tampons for teens...they are very thin and shouldn't hurt. Try inserting them on your heaviest days to practice because obviously there will be more lubricant there. If it continues to hurt I would speak to your school nurse or doc because it really shouldn't hurt at all. Good luck

Well, tampons can cause dryness in that area which can be painful. Try using a smaller tampon (they have teen and slender ones) and/or a lighter absorbency because you may be using one that is just too big. If you take it out too soon, the dryness will be worse and that is a big OUCH! Also, don't use scented tampons because they can cause irritation. You can also call that 1-800 number on the back of the box and ask questions. It's not stupid, they answer those types of questions ALL day. Don't worry it'll get better, you just need to try something else. Good luck.

Hey, Cookie!
I first got my period when I was 12 and too was embarassed. I wore pads until I was 19 and a freshman in college. I had a hard time putting in the tampon and it really hurt trying. My cousin even tried helping me insert the tampon, but it wouldn't go in (I almost died from embarassment from this experience)! Finally, when I was almost 20, I inserted my first tampon. I just had to relax and think about how much more convenient it would be to wear a tampon. I got it in and was so proud I called everyone I knew to tell them about my success! Once you get past one of the vaginal muscles, the tampon will just "take" and the pain will be over. The more you use tampons, the less pain you will experience. There is nothing wrong with using pads. If you eventually feel ready for tampons, just practice and experiment more. I know you will get the hang of it! Good luck, my dear young friend!

they can make you very dry and that is painful. If you try and it doesn't work, wait an hour before you try again. Trying twice in a row will hurt anyone.

Try putting a little vaseline on the tip to make it go in easier.

I am 12 and i use tampons, they are very natural to me, and all my friends think im like a freak becuz i do. you will get used to them and like them way more than pads.good luck :)

tampons take time to get used to.. you can try using the "teen' ones i think its called, they are alot smalled than the regular ones and thats how i got started. Another thing could be, if you use the OB ones, relax yourself and make sure you push it in as far as you can, usually if it hurts its because you dont have it in far enough! also, if youre just going swimming and not lounging around after, you can go without a tampon. water stops it from coming. trust me. sit in a bath tub next time and you;ll see. Hope things work out for you!
