I'm 14 and i recently had my first period and the only way i knew was because 2 days before i had it i had a small amount of blood on my undies but it wasn't enough to go through and leave a mark on the pants i was wearing. i also knew because i had severe lower back pain and that was the only symtom i had.
when you have had a few you just know
try keeping a diary untill your used to it
i know a day ahead of time. usually you have some kinds of symtoms to tell you ahead of time. its different for all women.
sometimes I have stomach cramps a few days in advance.

Eithor way, you experience brown discharge on your underwear. Most girls will also feel cramps, and nipples might even feel hard and sore.
These might usually occur a couple of days before the actual period.
