Gross question, ladies only...?!

Question: So I am 13 and Im guessing i am gonna get my period soon, and when i do, after the first few periods i wantt to use tampons. ive been searching for the right 'hole' with mirrors, etc and i found it. the only prob is that i can only fit my finger in if i put my stomach muscles a weird way and my vagina, like, sucks in air and it expands and if i dont do that then if i even try it hurts.. is this normal? (sorry it had 2 be so gross)

Well, you are in the time frame for that first period, and it's good you are giving thought to things. But don't automatically assume you will be able to use a tampon right away. Lots of young girls find they are uncomfortable, partially because they are just physically too small just yet and because you will more than likely have an intact hymen. You don't need to worry about what it takes to put your fingers inside, because you won't be putting them there. You won't need to get your hands in any different a position to insert a tampon than you do to wipe yourself after you go to the bathroom. The vaginal canal itself is quite capable of the expansion needed to accept a tampon when the time comes. Meantime, you will be a lot healthier and saner if you don't try this kind of manipulation. As far as locating things, well- there is only one spot a tampon can go in, it's not like you have a wide variety of choice there. But with mirrors, you can certainly see what the fuss is about. I think you should have a discussion about this with your mom for starters. She will be the best one to help you when the time comes. If you decide to try tampons, I think you'll have a lot better luck with the slender junior sort. I recommend you get a box just for learning purposes, and plan to try them the first time when you are desparate to wear one. You will also need to wait until you actually have a period to try. And in spite of your motivation to use them, do prepare yourself not to be able to for a while yet. It's not that unusual not to be able to wear them comfortably for a while, and even the getting used to inserting them can be a bit tricky. Start the conversation with your mom now though- no better time than the present to start getting prepared. She's gotten you this far, and can certainly see you through this part. She already knows all about periods, tampons and pads, and her ears won't fall off if you bring up the subject. Mom is a good friend to have right about now, she'll always have the answers or know where to get them, she will tell you the truth, and won't laugh at anything you come up with. And since she already knows where all your freckles are, there is no need to be embarassed. She did change your diapers, after all.

Everything you're saying is comlpetely normal. I'm glad you are wondering about this early.

You should probably experiment early with smaller tampons, that way you'll be ready when the time comes. Not to mention much more comfortable.

well you are very young and nothing i assume has been in there before so there has been no way to streach it. It is VERY normal for it to be like that. Playtex makes small tampons for pre teens or early teenagers that should fit you just fine. Good luck at your first step in experiencing womanhood!!!

You're not being gross. Sweetie, I am going to advise you not to use tampons for the time being. There really is no need to use them, except if you are really athletic or can't bear the idea of going 4-6 days without swimming in the summer months. You're getting familiar with your body, and that's a good thing, but don't do anything that is going to make you uncomfortable, and know that Tampon insertion is tricky at first and if you're tense it will be even more difficult. Use slender ultra thin pads by Always....you won't even know they're there. DO NOT follow the above person's advice and start experimenting with tampons before your period begins! You are never supposed to use a tampon unless you're menstruating. If you're really wanting to try them when your period starts, talk to your mom or the school nurse, or a trusted friend.

tampons are pretty easy to enter if u read directions...i started using them on my 6th period which was last week.it doesnt hurt so dont worry u can go to http://www.beinggirl.com/en_US/goods_tam... and it will tell you how to insert a tampon CORECTLY :] have fun

A tampon will be easier to insert than what you are attempting. What you are describing is normal and I know what you are saying with the "sucks in air and it expands". Your body in that area is a cavity and therefore can breathe in air, so to speak. Don't worry that you are abnormal because you are not. A tampon will be easier to use if you use a plastic applicator to start and a light absorbency. Then if you need to, use a bigger one as your period gets heavier. I would not recommend experimenting early with tampons because as that area gets dry with the tampon when you don't need one, removing it can be a painful thing.

lol its alright i went through the same thing, although i dont think you should use a tampon right away maybe after your 2nd or 3rd period, anyway there are instructions on how to insert it in the tampon box..make sure you put it on an angle, it usually helps if u stand with one foot on the toilet to open it up (gross i know) its normal to feel a little bit of pain..the first couple of times for me really hurt but dont force it, cuz that reallyy hurts lol, just go slow and if u dont get it the first time, stop and use a pad, theyre more comfy anyway lol, then later on try again :) theres no rush!

hope it helped!

sexist!!! SEXIST!!!

It is painful at first. But you will get used to it quickly. Tampons are the way to go. Just make sure that you change them regularly so you don't put yourself at risk for TSS.
I personally would use them with your first period. Waiting won't make any difference. Also, lite panty liners are nice to still wear just in case you leak a little then you won't have to worry about it getting on your clothes.
Good Luck..and you can always ask your mom...

It's not abnormal. You did what you needed to find a way that works for you.

that's fine. it will be really weird for the first few times. you HAVE to try and relax your whole body. Your muscles will relax and it is ealier to put the tampon in. Try to exhale as you put it in. Also, this is a muscle that really hasn't been used before, so you are kind of working it out, so that's why it hurts
