Has anyone had negative side effects from the Depo shot?!

Question: Can the depo shot cause depression, even months after you are due for another, but choose not to renew it? What experiences have you had with it?

I was on Depo for about 2-3 years, and although I was not aware of it at the time, getting off depo gave me insight as to how crabby and miserable I was during my depo years. My mom said that being on depo has similar hormonal effects to menopause. I dont know how true that is but it did seem to feel that way to me. I would stay clear away from it.

yes, if you are prone to depression they won't give you the shot. the "depo" prefix in depo provera refers to the fact that it is a long term drug. it lasts 3 months and tends to cause weight gain and mood swings. it has ended many a relationship in my friends' lives.

I took it along time ago and it was bad for me, it made me break out with acne, I couldn't sleep and I bled and bled, so it was miserable, you can google some facts up on it pros and cons, I took it because I can never take a pill regularly... but it wasn't worth it at all, I think it has been linked to cancer too???

50lbs in 8 months, is a negative side effect that happened to me! And believe me, I am healthy, I eat healthy and I am a retired gymnast that works out. Plus to add: vaginal dryness that caused sex to burn and uncomfortable, and ZERO sex drive! I'm off of it now, losing weight and sex drive is up and better than ever! Oh, and no more problems of dryness!

Ditto with the weight gain - 40lbs in 4 months with NO change in diet or exercise habits. The mood swings were unbearable fro me to live with - I can't imagine how my husband and children felt. The effects didn't stop for several months after the shot should have "worn off". I had to go on hormones to counter the depo. STAY AWAY FROM DEPO!!!!

I would never even touch the Depo. I have heard horror stories about that product. It's entirely not worth it to me.

Look into an IUD.

I got a strange little lump next to each nipple making me freak out and think I had cancer, and I bled and bled and bled, making me anemic. but when I asked I was told 'oh don't worry, your body is just getting used to it, but the next one will straighten you all out'. so being all naieve (spell?) and being a dummy I got the next one, and so I bled for 6 months, was an emotional basket case, and my body never got used to it. never ever again!

Hope you don't mind a guy posting. My girlfriend went through something like this. She went on the shot, she was OK while it was still "active", with the exception of gaining of gaining a few pounds. She decided not to get another shot and a few weeks later she was depressed, would barely talk, didn't want to see anybody or talk on the phone like she had before. She complained of hot flashes and heavy perspiration. She cried a lot and couldn't handle any amount of stress. It has taken her nearly a year to get back to her old self again. I may be a guy, but I do not recommend this shot for any other ladies.
