Question: Hi, I'm 17 and I will be going to the gynecologist soon for my very first appointment. I am only going to get on birth control, and am not sexually active. What should I expect during the exam? I am VERY scared.

my daughter is around your age and had to go the gynocologist for female problems which required birthcontrol pills to regulate. The gynocologist did not examine her since she was not sexually active. Yours may not either. Good Luck and it is nothing to be afraid of, you will be ok.

well if you're not active is there a medical reason you want to go on BC? or are you planning on being active. Most docs wont even do an exam on girls that are virgins. Imostly just ask questions. But when you go if they decide to do an exam.. the lil tool they use its COLD ( pray you get one that is heated) and big to me! It creates pressure.. it doesnt hurt but its very uncomfortable, and being a virgin it might be a lil more so. but they stick a swab inside and get a sample to send of to make sure you dont have any infections or anything, and really thats about it for ya first visit. just relax, the more stressed and tense you are the more it will hurt! But nothing to worry about, youll get use to it! good luck!

it will be very cold when they examine your......you know

You should relax. Being nervous at an appointment like that will make your muscles tense, and may cause you some discomfort during the exam.

I was scared the first time too. See if you can get a female gynocologist if you are very sensitive and nervous about this. I did and it made me feel more comfortable. Also, tell them about how you feel. Maybe they don't even need to do an exam yet. Perhaps since you are not sexually active, they can just give you the birth control. (oh, and I'll add here that I know plenty of virgins and non-sexually active women who use birth control to regulate periods- it even helps with acne) However, it's still important to have yearly pap smears once you get to be a bit older. . . I started getting mine when I went to college at age 17.

It's much easier that you think. You will go into the office, the nurse will take you into an examining room and then ask you some questions, like when was your last period, are you active, do you have any problems like yeast infections, etc. . . Then they will ask you to remove your underwear and pants and they will give you a paper sheet to wrap around your bottom part to cover you. They will leave the room while you undress and cover up. Then a minute or 10 later (sometimes it takes a while) the doc will knock on the door and enter and introduce themselves. They will probably first check your heartbeat with a stethescope and then feel your breasts for any lumps in a circular rotating pattern. Then they will ask you to lean back and you will lay back on the table (covered with paper) and put your feet up in "syrups". They are like metal foot holders so your legs are spread slightly apart and up. The doctor often will tell you what they are doing and what you should feel as they are doing it to make you feel more comfortable. Some doctors will also talk to you as they do this to ease your mind. Then they will wear gloves and the doctor will feel the inside of your cervix for any lumps or cancer. Now, I'm not sure if this first part is only for women who have had children, since Id on't remember my doctors doing this before I had kids. .. or maybe they did. This will feel like a slight pressure but won't hurt. Then they will insert a little metal spectual (not sure if thats the spelling) inside your vagina and open you up a little so they can quickly swab your cervix. (this may be slightly uncomfortable and cold, but if you relax and breath it's a lot easier since the muscles relax down there) (the back of your vagina) with a cue tip. This is called a pap smear. Then she will close up the metal opener and you are done. Usually you can then put your legs together and sit up and she will hand you a tissue or papertowel to clean up once she leaves the room and you can put back on your clothes. Then you will leave the room, go to the front desk and pay your copay or office payment.

is normal, they will chek ur bobies... and they will check u...with the normal check.. maybe they will do the test for the paps... which is simple a little uncorfortable... but nothing too traumatazing...! dont be scare.. is part of it , and is really quick!
Good luck!

Dont worry, when i went to my gynocologist appointment nothing even went anywhere near my "area". she will just ask you some questions about your period.

i went last year for the first time to get on the pill because my periods were so irregular and since i was not sexually active they didnt do anything down there...
she told me that since im not active and im under 21... that there was no need
so just talk to her

There is a thorough description on this site:
http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/pelvici...

But actually, the description makes it sounds worse than it is! It will be important to try to calm yourself and relax your abdominal muscles; try slow, deep breathing. Being tense can make the exam uncomfortable.

If you have questions afterward, the above site should help.

There is a very good and less daunting description from an RN who answered a similar question a week ago. You should read it through.

I'm sure you'll be fine.
