Its called menstruation and its part of a woman's monthly reproductive cycle. A woman starts day one of her period, this is when the lining of her uterus sheds. Its lasts 4-8 days. After that she has follicles that begin to ripen and the lining of the uterus will again begin to thicken in preparation of hosting a fertilized egg. Eventually, one will ripen and release an egg. This is so tiny it cannot be seen with the naked eye. If she has intercourse, it is possible for the egg to be fertilized by sperm, and this fertilized egg will then travel down and implant in the uterus thus producing a baby.
If not, then the egg will get flushed out an the corpus lutem will stop producing progesterone signaling that the egg was not fertilized and the uterine lining will again break down and she will have her period.

No, it is not gross, and nothing to joke about. A period is also called menstruation, basically it makes girls go through puberty just like guys do (only different) without our period, we couldn't have babies. So thank your mom for having her period.

well godwin it goes a little something like this..when a girl hits the age where she is physically able to carry children, her period starts. blood leaks out of her (down there) for about a week every month while the body flushes out her old "sack" that the baby goes in and her body makes a new one. this happens every month for the rest of the woman's life. its a terrible burden, it makes women uncomfortable and it hurts, you get cramps in your stomach not too mention the maintenance involved. soo..its not a pretty picture, but its nature. the human body is preparing to carry a child, over and over from the time the girl is about 12 years old until shes in her 50's. well thats about it..
