Early period, over a week bleeding?!

Question: Okay, I started my period early. About 2 weeks early actually. I know it was early and I also am pretty confident it was a period. I got the cramps, had the food cravings the night before and I broke out on my face about a week prior. Very typical PMS for me. I have had very light bleeding for over a week now. My periods typically last 4-5 days. The bleeding has been very consistent.

I did miss some of my birth control pills and am thinking this could be due to that but I would have expected it to have stopped by now. I then decided to take myself off the pills until I stopped. That didnt work. I called my OBGYN and he said as long as it is light bleeding wait another week and if it hasnt stoped then come and see him.

I know I am not pregnant, one would have to have sex to do that and that has not happeded in a long time.

What do you think it could be?

My girlfriend gets the same thing, even if she only misses one pill (birth control pill). Also, depending upon your age, it could be perimenopause. This usually starts in the late thirties up through the late forties.
