There are quite a few reasons. They could still be growing (it happens throughout your life), your bra could be too tight or ill-fitting, or you could have a slight infection. It could also be hormonal - you can get an ache around the time you ovulate (mid-period for most), if you are stressed, not eating or sleeping enough, or sometimes if you are using or changing brand of birth control pill. It could even be added exercise without proper support if you are naturally curvy, and of course, sexual excitement or orgasm can do it too!

If you haven't done so recently, I'd encourage regular self-breast examinations. The only way to tell if something is out of place there is to know how your breasts normally feel. An exam is best done at the half way point between periods. Check for any lumps, localized areas of pain, inverted nipple and swelling or discharge around the nipple. Also remember to check your armpit area.

Then pop into your local department store and get your bra size checked. Don't go to a speciality store like Victoria's Secret though, they are encouraged to make sure you will fit one of their sizes, so they are often quite inventive (one assistant tried to tell me my 32E's were really 38C's!!)

If you are at all worried though, or it does not go away, go to the doctor. It may be a sign of hormone imbalance or a lot of other things. Breast pain that does not go away, or seems localized is not something you want to take chances with, even if there is no obvious lump.

Have you done any kind of exercise that may have worked your pectorals(chest muscles) within the last 12-48 hours? It is not necessary to actually do anything in the gym, just any kind of motion that may have put those muscles to more use than normal. Look up a good stretch, google it, for the chest, should help with the soreness if it is exercise related.

Try to drink a lot of water. You might also have had a horomone shift that causes it. Not every cycle is exactly perfect. If it persists until after your next period, get it checked out.
