Should my mum stay off work with a bad back?!

Question: My mother is a dinnerlady and she is suffering from lower back pain. I feel she should return to work but other people feel she should take time off and rest. She is 51 and her job is physically demanding. I am worried about her health and wondered what she should do.

Low back pain can feel worse when the sufferer is immobile, so it's important to keep moving. However, standing for long periods can make the pain worse.

Your Mum needs to see her doctor to see if an anti inflamatory, like Ibuprofen would help her, along with a painkiller such as Paracetamol. She almost certainly needs some advice on moving and handling heavy dinner trays safely. Bad lifting practices are a major cause of back problems.

I was off work for about 3 months with lower back pain tell her to see her doctor he will give her pain killers and anti-in filamentary tables also a sick note she should rest

Good to see that you think she should return yet others are more concerned that she should stay off and rest!

That statement puzzles me?

Let me get this straight your mother has a bad back and is in pain and her job is physically demanding. Now you propose that the best thing for her health is to go back to work and probably aggravate the situation. I'm glad you are not mine.

Because of your mums job Health and Safety would not allow her to work with a bad back. She is not only a danger to herself but to others. Imagine she is carrying something hot and she gets a twinge in her back she could scald herself, one of the other dinner ladies or even a child. So in a word no she should not be at work. And if you are worried about her health get her to see a doctor instead of telling her to go back to work!
