What is involved with a Hysteroscopy?!

Question: Is it just a test? Is surgery involved? Are you awake or under anesthesia? If you're awake is it invasive and very painful? My doctor has a bad habit of playing everything down, and not giving me any information on medical tests, not even telling me the truth of what they are called.
She tricked me into believing that a Hysterosonography was just a simple sonogram (like one you'd have externally,) never bothering to tell me what the proper name for this was, or that I should have taken a few Advil first or that it was very painful and very invasive.
A uterine "mass" was found from this test, and now she's referring me to a specialist...I just want to know what to expect, I'm so sick and tired of being lied to.

Sounds like you need to get a new doc...one you can have a very trusting relationship ith. Hopefully , the specialist you are going to is like that. Be assertive and go prepared with a list of questions. Some docs have a nurse practitioner in the office who is easier to talk to and good at explaining things. Here are some articles on the subject. Hope things work out well for you.

A hysteroscopy is procedure where a scope is inserted into the abdominal/pelvic area & depending on whether tis is just for observation or removal of any female organs (ovaries, etc.) it can be done through the scope.
As a rule you are asleep with anesthesia, therefore it is painless during the procedure.

It is a procedure that is done like a pap smear, using a speculum and a small scope to inspect the lining of the uterus. More than likely if a mass is found, they will take a piece of it and send it out to be tested. This procedure should not be any more uncomfortable than what a pap smear is. If there is to be surgury done they will put you to sleep to do it. I just had a hystorectomy done. I didn't feel a thing. When I came to, I had no discomfort at all. I was able to go a do the things I did before in less than 1 week. I just have to be careful on the heavy lifting, otherwise everything is back to normal.

You have a right to go to another doctor, if you are not satisfied with her. You also have a right to file a complaint with the American Medical Association against the doctor if you feel that the doctor is not being up front with you. Remember you are entitled to a second opinion .

Good Luck, I hope everything goes ok.
