Birth control SHOT vs Birth conrol PILL....?!

Question: Okay so my doctor recommened the shot, because then you dont have to take your pills everyday. But not getting your period, wouldn't you get sick from the blood not comming out? Theres a reason why blood comes out every month and if it doesnt what happens?
With the shot do you gain weight, get headaches, feel nauseas, vomit?? if so how often?
And with birth control pill i know youd get your period....but for how long??

I need a doctors answer...HELP!

Please please please don't get depo provera. It really screws up women's bodies.

I am an OB RN and have also been on the depo shot for 6 1/2 years and love it! It is not for everyone, but doing some research before hand helps. You will not get sick from blood not coming out because you do not build up a monthly lining like you normally would when your uterus sheds its lining. It also prevents ovulation and thus, 'stops' your monthly cycle. You will experience some or a lot of spotting or continual bleeding most likely after your first shot. If it is really bad some doctors can prescribe pills to help it stop. After the second and third shots you will either have very light periods or none at all. I personally have had none at all for YEARS and it is great. I had very very bad cramps before and don't have to deal with that anymore. Everyone experiences some side effects. Most people are worried about weight gain and you can control that. Depo can alter your appetite by making you more hungry, so eat healthier snacks and you will most likely be ok! As for nausea I have never heard of that as a side effect. You can also try the pill for a little while and see if you like it or no then switch to the shot if you do not like it. There are many options and it is best to discuss it with your doctor. Websites like planned parenthood have very good descriptions on different options. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Having your period is the way your body cleans itself, so personally I like to have my period so my body can do it's thing. My friend gets the shot and she doesn't have her period on it, but right after she gets it she's a friggin witch. It's a lot of hormones all at once and it makes her really moody.

The shot is a huge boost in progestin as it ONLY contains progestin rather than the combination pill which has both a progestin and estrogen hormone level. Because of the huge progestin hormone level being given to you, it can cause things like depression because progestin blocks the seratonin in the brain (seratonin makes us feel happy). Estrogen causes the increase in production of seratonin but progestin blocks its effect on the body (I have found from personal experience, that low dose pills makes me depressed probably because of the higher dosage of progestin and the lower dosage of estrogen...when I was on Ortho 0.5/35 however, I did not feel moody or depressed at all but had to be taken off for other reasons).

Some people do not get any period when on the shot, and others bleed for the entire time. It just depends on how your body will react to such a high hormone level and the type of synthetic progestin that is put into the shot.

Because for the most part it causes a lack of a period, people tend to feel more bloated and retain more water, thus the idea that they have increased their body mass.

No matter what birth control method you use (as in the pill or the shot), you will never know how your body will react until you do it. The problem with the shot though however, is that you have no choice but to live with the side effects for 3 months automatically whereas the pill, if side effects stay the same and/or worsen over maybe 1-3 months, you have the option of stopping them and/or changing prescriptions.

Basically, you never know until you try it. I've been there too many times....in fact now my doctors (yes, I visit 2 different doctors and now they both want to know wtf is going on with me) want to figure out exactly why I react so badly to the birth control pill (been through 4 prescriptions...my gyno just gave me the go-ahead to stop using my last prescription because it was causing depression/anxiety...once again, a low-dose pill).

My experience with the pill has been:

Alesse (1 month) - extreme depression, headaches, EXTREME fatigue, continual bleeding non-stop on active pills, migraines

Diane-35 (1 and a half weeks) - cramps in calf, stabbing pain in calf/thigh, arm cramps, stabbing pain in foot, sudden weakness/lightheadedness/dizziness...tak... off because these are signs of a blood clot

Ortho 0.5-35 (3 months) - cramps began to get unbearable again, heavy bleeding in between periods

Yasmin (2 months) - depression/constant sadness, anxiety, NO sex drive, trouble getting a deep breath, fatigue, breakthrough bleeding on 3rd week and continuing throughout placebo week, every once in awhile I noticed I was breathing rapidly randomly (sometimes just before I fell asleep I would be quite aware that my breathing was really rapid and couldn't get a deep breath which scared me also), made my face break out

If I were to go onto the shot, I would be worried about experiencing these problems on an on-going basis. I like to know that I can stop problems with a quick phone call rather than have to wait it out.

well i don't recommend any of those 2 because if you take the pill what if you forget to take it one day and for the shot you would go every 3 months for a shot and remember to make appnts.

what i recommend is the Mirena (IUD) with this you wont have to remember to take a pill or shot you can have one for 5 years and if you want to have kids go to the doctor and you can get it off that simple go to the web site and read more for more information..........well hope it helps
