How can abortions save the lives of the mother? What about C-sections?!

Question: The only types of pregnancies that I have seen that could cause the mother to have an abortion are a tubal pregnancy or if the mother has cancer and treatment would kill the unborn child - but even then many times the mother can hold off on some of the treatments and have a preemie delivered prior to treatment.

Unborn children with enlarged heads can many times be saved with shunts to allow for proper drainage of fluids from the brain - and this has been done for over 40 years. I grew up with someone who has her masters - started life with a shunt for this very purpose.

These types of pregnancies are very rare. So why are there so many abortions?

Very often times, an abortion will save the life of the mother in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, not just tubal. Ectopic is when the placenta connects to any tissue other than the uterus. This can be a fallopian tube, the cervix, other organs such as the stomach or intestine, etc. Sometimes, cancer patients find out when treatment is dire and cannot wait. Some women simply can't handle a pregnancy and would need serious medical care or could even die if she tried to carry the baby. (Personally have a friend who has elevated levels of testosterone who almost died carrying her only child)

Ultimately, I get what you're driving at with the right wing view of how there should be no abortions. Don't think I'm criticizing you, because as liberal as I am, I agree that the number of abortions should be decreased and should only be used if it is endangering the mother to carry on a pregnancy.

But you have to consider that, regardless of our ideals, abortion is still a woman's free right in the US. But I think that we could at least bring that number down by increasing knowledge of birth control and the availability of Plan B pills. (And before anyone comments that Plan B is "early abortion"- it is NOT. Plan B is taken within 72 to prevent a process that can take nearly a week to happen from occurring)

Because people don't want the baby, or the shame that comes with a baby (guessing most of the people had the baby out of wedlock).

Because abortion is legal as an elective procedure in this country, that is why there are so many. Some people use abortion as their birth control if you can believe it. There are 1000's of reasons people have them electively. There are many medical reasons people have them as well. Severe genetic abnormalities, malformed fetus, even testing positive for downe's syndrome. What exactly do you want to know?

There are quite a few cases when termination of the pregnancy can save the mother's life.

Just last week at the hospital I work at....
A mother just started her second trimester of pregnancy.
She was diagnosed with a very fast and dangerous spinal cancer. If she did not undergo radiation treatment, she could die within weeks. If she did undergo the radiation treatment, she would be better, but it would probably result in her unborn baby being deformed, severely mentally challenged, or dead.

Eventually the mom went into septic shock. The father made the decision to terminate the baby and save his wife's life.

You see how situations like this can be tricky? Usually there is no 'right' or 'wrong' answer. Everything is kind of mixed together. It really just depends on your ethical and religious perspective.

Another main reason for abortion is unwanted pregnancy. I don't know if you're aware, but here in the United States abortion is legal and has been legal for quite some time. I'm not saying my morals agree with it, but now it is every woman's right to have an abortion if she wants to. It's that simple.

My mother had several miscarriages and had to get an abortion because she couldn't risk it again. She could have died. There's no way she could carry a baby long enough to get a C-section. She also miscarried my twin and I was born premature.
