As long as you change them every couple of hours they are 100% safe. If you're worried about bleach or chemicals, look in the natural section of your store - there are options there.
Yes tampons are safe, I have been using them since I started me period 7 years ago. Just make sure you don't leave them in for more than 6-8 hours and you should be fine!

Aside from Toxic Shock Syndrome - which is very rare, you are correct in being concerned about the bleach and other chemicals are produced with. Shoving a wad of cotton up your vagina isn't exactly natural, and it isn't healthy either - we aren't a leaky faucet, we don't need our vaginae to be stuffed up! If you are concerned about this but still want to use tampons, do not ever use them over night, use them only for a few hours a day and shop organic if you can. It might be a little more expensive, but it will save you from harmful health effects in the future like cervical cancer, etc. Shop organic, use pads or another healthy alternative like the diva cup or home-made pads.

tottally safe, but you have to make sure that when you feel like you need to change it, change it. i you leave in to long, if you do you might be at risk of TSS. very dangerous, but they can be scary at first.
