Is there a reason for my extended periods?!

Question: I have had this problem pretty much all my life. I get my period for about a month at a time. The first period I ever got lasted about 2 months. My doctor said that it would take a year ar two for my period to regulate. I've been getting my period for nine years. When I was on birth control it did regulate. I've now been off birth control for 5 years. it slowly has gotten worse. Now I get my period evry 3 months and it lasts for about a month. It is moderate to heavy flow.

Go see your OBGYN!! Right now!!
I say this because I've had people close to me experience long periods and they've fainted, and had to have surgery.

Have your OBGYN perform an ultrasound to look inside your uterus and see if there's something wrong. Also, get your hemoglobin checked, it's supposed to be around12 or 13. If not, you may have a problem. You're loosing allot of blood and that's a big problem. As women, our reproductive system is one of the most important parts of our body and we have to make sure it's functioning properly. Do not take this lightly.

See another doctor, preferably a board certified gynecologist. You could have endometriosis, fibroids, or other things.

It is probably just your body's unique cycle. You should ask your mom about her periods, and perhaps a few other female relatives. Every female's body is different. My period is similar to yours although not as extreme. I get it once every six or seven weeks, and it lasts a week and a half to two weeks. It's all genetic.

You seem to have survived up until now. This could be the 'norm' for you.
However,
I would not just take that attitude, I think a visit to the doctor is advised here. Go ask the experts. Just to be on the safe side.

Good Luck
J
