Birth control....I want off! RN's or Doctors please! Or experienced people..!

Question: Ok so I've been on my birth control for about four years now and I want to get off it. I was thinking about just not getting another perscription after im done with this one, but im not sure if thats the right way to do it. I was also thinking of getting my next perscription and taking it like every other day or something of that nature. Basically my question is whats the best way to wein myself of or stop completely. Thanks ahead of time!

Birth control pills are not addictive, nor do they have withdrawl problems- so there isn't a need to "wean" yourself off anything. If you want to stop taking them, you simply stop. I recommend you do that by just not starting a new pack. You will experience the usual withdrawl bleed, and then your body will begin the process of taking the monthly hormonal cycle over again without the ovulation supression the pill created. Your body simply thinks you have been pregnant for a while- and it will take a few months for all that to return to normal. You can expect it to take anywhere from 4-6 months before you get a normal period, and up to a year for the pattern to fully re-establish itself to the point you can predict the rough start date. The worst thing you could actually do is what you suggested- taking it every other day. That would simply create a hormonal rollercoaster ride for your body, and things would seriously be messed up. When you decide you want to stop, finish the pack you are on and just don't start another one. Since you have a prescription on hand, it would probably be easiest to finish this one, and just not refill it again. After the withdrawl bleed finishes, wait to see how it goes. If you go more than 4-6 months without a natural, non-pill influenced period, then you'd need to see your gyn. And of course, if the time rolls around for the annual pap smear, you would go have that done on time.

do not do every other day or anything like that. Just finish your cycle or pack of pills and then dont start the new one. you just go cold turkey. It regulates your hormones and blood flow so much that you cant take it every other day, especially with the estrogen

Just don't get the prescription renewed! There's nothing special you have to do like weaning yourself off. That would only confuse you with the hormones fluctuating like that.

It might take your body a while to get back to normal after being on it so long, but all you can do is stop cold turkey.

don't take it every other day, it wont do anything. make an appt with your dr and when you finish your current cycle, simply stop taking it. just know that you need to use other bc methods to keep from getting pregnant.

You can just stop. If you're determined to quit taking birth control for a while, then you'll be fine stopping. Sometimes it is recommended that you don't go on and off freqently (Say, on two months, off for a month, on again...), but if this is for a while... go for it!

Just stop taking them! They aren't addictive or anything. The pills just add extra hormones that regulate your cycle, but your body is still producing it's own hormones the entire time. So, when you stop taking the pills, your body's own hormone levels will be what regulates your cycle rather than the hormone levels that the pills gave you.

Basically, this means you can stop whenever you want. Your body will resume doing what it normally does with no problem.

don't do every other day or you will have breakthrough bleeding, which is very annoying. just stop taking after your period, and thats all you need to do. I hate birth control and thats what my doc advised me to do , but i switched to the ring bc i can't have a baby in law school, i just can't!
so DON'T take it every other day, you don't need to ween yourself off of BC :)
