Has anyone with PCOS lost weight and if so how?!

Question: Yes. Since diagnosis in 12/03. Started on Metformin (glucophage), Spironalactone (dieuretic), and Yasmin. The diabetic medication helped even out cravings (feeling like low blood sugar between meals). My Dr. that diagnosed me was not willing to treat me with metformin unless I wanted to become pregnant again. I sought out a more aggressive Dr. who would. Why should I have to suffer because I'm done having kids.

I lost 55lbs. over 2 years with Calorie Counting and exercise. I'm 5'9" and weighed 225#. I tried to keep my calories between 1300-2000/day (eat 4-5x/day making sure to have protien with all meals and snacks). I lifted weights once a week and did 30+minutes of cardio 3 times a week (walk, bike, rollerblade, xc ski).

I've kept it off for 2 years, however fluctuated 5lbs the 1st year and now 10lbs this year and finding it hard to get beyond this point. I'm blaming my metabolism at the moment. It seems my calorie requirements have decreased by 500c/day in the last year.

I also tried to drink 8 cups of H2O/day. I carry a cooler with me everywhere with lots of 100c snacks to prevent being ravenous and pigging out. I listened to a wt. loss hypnosis tape at bedtime somewhat frequently.

I used a heart rate monitor with exercise. I could calculate exactly how much I should have lost in a week. There are calorie calculators online based on age, weight, height, activity level. 3500c=1lb.

Find your calorie requirements, create a calorie defecit daily - usually 500 calories and subtract calories burned by exercise weekly. Lots of sites with food values available.

Measure yourself monthly as well. You will often see inches lost when not losing lbs.

I think the biggest key to my successful weight loss was emotional counseling. Dealing with triggers and excess baggage - still working on that one, but this is the 1st time I've lost weight and kept it off for a significant period of time.

In the past, it was always yo-yo before often gaining more than I had lost. Good Luck!

Yes, I've met a few women that have PCOS and were able to lose weight. One of them did it with the help of Glucophage (a medication used to treat Diabetics but can be helpful to some women with PCOS because of having a condition called Insulin Resistance as well-a step below Diabetes). Another woman did it with the help of a low carb diet like The Zone Diet.
