The hymen?!

Question: Ohk. So I have been told by a Sexual Health Nurse that the hymen ISN'T a flap of skin that gets torn during your first time having sex.
And then all my friends (who are all virgins, as am I) tell me that it IS a flap of skin that breaks the first time you have sex.
So you see, I am quite confused about this matter.
Your knowledge is greatly appreciated!
Thank you everyone in advance!

The hymen is not a "flap" of skin, but rather a ring of skin (or tissue) that encircles the entrance of the vagina. Why it's there is anybody's guess (just like an appendix), but it is. It is similar to the skin between your thumb & forefinger...only MUCH more thin & more delicate.

At any rate, when a penis penetrates the vagina, it can tear this tissue, causing pain and bleeding. It is also possible that the hymen is torn LONG before you ever have sex by something simple like a fall on your butt or other pelvic trauma (like what might occur in gymnastics).

who do u think knows better? the nurse? or ur virgin friends??

please cop on!

listen to the nurse. shes more educated

It is not really skin. It is more of a membrane.

Listen to the one who has had a $100,000 education and years of school. Duh

exzactly you would think better to listen to the nurse over your friends she would know way more. after all nurse went to school to know all she does.

They're both right...to a degree. It is a membrane flap that partially covers the entrance of the vagina which allows menstrual fluid to pass through. Some girls have a thicker hymen which can cover the majority of the opening whereas other girls have a hymen so small it could be non-existent. Sex has nothing to do with it tearing. You could tear it at any age doing anything like sports or tampon insertion.

ok personally, i would believe a certified nurse rather than ignorant friends

The link below has drawings that might help.
