Girls have you had a pap smear..?!

Question: my doctor wants to do one on me since ive been on birth control for a while, even though im not sexually active. I think it would be really awkward taking off my pants and underwear an having my doctor poke around down there..umm can you tell me whats going to happen and if its going to hurt?

IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 & NOT SEXUALLY ACTIVE IT WILL BE QUITE UNCOMFORTABLE. I HAD MY DAUGHTER GET ONE AT 18 BEFORE SHE WENT TO COLLEGE-SHE WAS A VIRGIN & I WISH THAT I HAD WAITED UNTIL SHE WAS SEXUALLY ACTIVE. IF YOUR DR DOES NOT GIVE YOU A REASON WHY IT IS MEDICALLY NECESSARY-I WOULD PASS. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS-HAD HAND SURGERY & HAVE TO TYPE W/ONE FINGER.

It natural , if you are sexually active then you need to be getting regular smears done. It is awkward at first and is uncomfortable but they tell you exactly what they doing at the time as well as your aren't naked, you have a gown on.

Somebody gave you birth control without a pelvic exam? Never heard of that, but it sounds like you have never been examined in the pelvic region.

Go to a special doctor; an ob/gyn doctor...and yes, eventually you will have to get used to doctors poking around down there and take tests and stuff. All part of being a woman.

nope

ladies are supposed to get one every year or two so its something you have to learn to get used to and its to make sure you stay healthy and they could catch something like cancer, hpv, stds, in time before it does any damage to you. It depends on the doctor if it is uncomfortable to you tell her so they usually make you get undressed and put the gown on and scoot you to end of table and spread and check for infections by using a long q- tip swab and sliding it across inside they have forcep that holds vagina open so they can see,if it hurts too much tell her-and while theyre there they usually feel breasts to make sure theyre ok and you uterus and bowels by pushing slightly on the stomach area and they ask if it hurts

It's not so bad. It takes less than 5 minutes and the doctor is very professional about it. It's a little uncomfortable, but no, it doesn't hurt.

Most docs do one before you're ever put on birth control pills.

you will undress from the waist down and have a sheet to lay over you. the dr will have a nurse in there the whole time. you will be asked to slide down and place your feet in the stirrups. the dr will use some lubricant to help insert the little metal thingy that opens you then he/she will take a little wooden "popsicle-like" stick and gently scrap the inside of your vagina and your cervix. then they will rub the cervix with a little brush to get a few cells to check for caner. then remove the metal thingy--sorry, cannot remember the name of it. you will be asked a few questions and that is about it for that exam.

Its all very professional and it doesn't hurt - just a tiny uncomfortable feeling.
If you go to a family planning clinic you can have it done by someone else(someone who does it
everyday to alot of women so there would be no awkwardness about it) , or ask for a female
doctor at the clinic.
You are better off just getting it overwith.
It could be awkward having your own doc do it.
Best of luck!

first, what they do is leave the room and have you change out of your clothes into a little paper napkin-like vest. yes, awkward :-) then you have a paper blanket to put over your lap while you're sitting there. The doc will come in and have you lie down on the table and scoot your bottom to the very edge of the table and put your legs in the stirrups. it feels really weird, but the best thing you can do is just concentrate on your breathing. it's what I do. Then he'll take this metal thing that looks like a duck bill, with a ton of lube (yes, lube) and put that up you to kind of spread you open so he or she can see up there. then they'll take a big q tip and swab your cervix. this part feels like a menstrual cramp. your cervix is usually only the size of the tip of a pencil, so that q tip hurts a bit, but it's really not bad, it's not even as bad as menstrual cramps. Then he'll give that to the nurse to take to test, then he'll probably stick two fingers up you and press on your underbelly. this is only so he or she can feel your ovaries and uterus, and make sure you have no cysts. yes, it's very uncomfortable, but you just have to keep concentrating on your breathing and know it's very quick. Then, The doc will probably do a breast exam, they are very quick about it, they just press on your breasts in various areas with the palm of their hand. It's all very professional. If you get self conscious, just keep in mind (as I do), they have to do this to 80 year old vaginas too, so you have nothing to worry about :-D. Good luck!

Pap smear is done for the detection of early sign of cancer cervix. it should be routine after the age of forty but in some cases at 35 yrs and above.

the first time is akward but it gets easier. It doesn't hurt but feels weird
