Answers: I got my period last September and I still use pads. I go to summer camp so I am going to have to wear tampons, but I am too scared to. What should I do?

P.s. I am turning 14 in 3 months.

I started using tampons when I was your age b/c I played basketball for school. Personally, I like them better than pads b/c I don't have to worry about that bad pad smell or if I have a leak, etc.

They make different sizes & different brands. I would try the "light" ones first. Playtex gentle glide and Tampax Pearl work best in my opinion. It doesn't hurt to put them in (well, it might the first time). The only reason it would hurt is if you don't have it in far enough (then you'd have a pinching feeling when you bend or sit down).

And don't worry about TSS. I've been using tampons for 7 years and I haven't met anyone who's gotten that. As long as you shower everyday & don't leave your tampon in longer than 6 hrs, you'll be fine. Also, they say you get TSS when you use a tampon that's bigger than you need. SO, like I said, try the light ones first. They make some that are only as big around as like a pencil or a permanent marker and about 2- 2 1/2 inches long.

And I'd try them now so if I had questions, I could ask someone instead of waiting for camp.

Personally I find that the pads are a safer alternative to Tampons as many women have bad reactions to these little sticks of cotton. I'm sure you've heard of "toxic shock syndrome"?

If you're determined you're going to use these when you're at camp I would suggest first to try them while you're at home and in a safe environment where if you feel ill after inserting one, you can quickly get access to a bathroom to remove it.

Be safe.

They are pretty easy to use. There are pictures in the box of what to do and instruction. Talk to your mom.

Toxic shock happens when you leave them in too long. Don't leave one in over 4-6 hours. It tells you that in the instructions.

i wear pads.
i never wore tampons till after i had sex...
i just couldnt..it hurt me...
but youre 14 wear pads.

its not that scary honey, just read the directions carefully and u will be ok. thats the way i learned when my period came right before my date to the waterslides. u might have to practice a couple of times but its really worth it

I do not like pads. You have to change them too often or if you get the thicker ones it feels REALLY weird. So I wear a tampon. I was scared the first time too. You also have the risk of TSS (toxic shock syndrome) but as long as you follow the directions on the box (don't wear longer than 8 hours) you should have no problems and you need to talk to your mom.
Once you get used to them I think you will perfer them to pads. Good luck!

If you don't want to use tampons, don't and continue using the pads. I personally don't believe young girls should be using tampons anyway. There is nothing wrong with the pads other than being a little bulky and annoying. Follow you instincts and not what others tell you.

u dont need womanly help u need Dr.psychiatric help... its just a period wats ya problem?
