When should a girl have her first pelvic exam?!
Question: i have recently started being a foster parent, and my first children are a 12 year old and her 1 1/2 year old sister. they were taken away from their mother 3 weeks ago because she was a drug addict. the 12 year old started her first period yesterday. i was just wondering if her first pelvic exam should be now, since her period started, or should it wait? i didn't have my first pelvic exam until i got pregnant.. so i wouldn't know... and i am pretty excited.the 1 1/2 year old called my husband (ya husband) mama! she knows that we are going to be her family for a while.i don't think that the 12 year old knows that we know this but... we were shopping for Easter dresses today, and the words "Wow! this one is so pretty! Can i get this one mo... Dani?" i think that she thinks we didn't hear her. we want to adopt them both. it might be a little weird though. my husband and i could be her big brother and sister with the age differences... she is half our age

I can tell you as the mother of a daughter who had similar issues to your foster child, that finding a gyno who will see a 12 year old is very hard.
That kind of pain is not normal though. Perhaps you can call the pediatrician you have them go to and ask if there is a gynocologist he or she suggest.
Usually a girl gets her first gyno exam when she becomes sexually active or if she has any problems with her period or any abnormalities/infections/etc in the pelvic area.
I'm not sure if a pelvic exam is like a pap smear, but at 12 I really don't think she needs one. For a lot of those things they don't do them unless there is a problem or the girl is sexually active.

I don't think she needs a pelvic anytime soon. Usually get those when you become sexually active, I believe. If she is having problems with her period then maybe you could get her checked out, otherwise I think she should be OK. Good luck!!
You don't have a pelvic exam until you start to have sex or are 18 years old. You can get them earlier if you have problems but otherwise they're not needed.
They become mandatory at 18, virgin or not.

I am so happy you're a foster parent! I'm only 21 but I definitely want to be a foster parent once I'm finished college *I'm taking early childhood education, it's been my dream since I was a toddler, cute story behind it* There are so many children that have been through the worst and I was abused as a child, I was raped for years by an older cousin and I want to make sure it doesn't happen to other children but I think that I would do an amazing job as a foster parent because I've been through some of the stuff and know that if you have people who love and believe in you, it makes a huge difference in your life. I think you're doing a wonderful job as a foster parent!

Anyways....I would say sexually active or at age 18-19.....which ever comes first....hopefully age 18-19 :o)

Unless there is a problem, there isn't a need for a pelvic exam until she is 18-21 or sexually active. I would say that with the rough life she's had, she doesn't need to be put through a pelvic exam at 12. And I congratulate you on being a foster parent. This world needs a whole lot more people who are willing to help children who have no one.
Congratulations on your family growth! Generally, girls get their first pelvic exam either at 18 or when they become sexually active, so she has a few years to go, as long as she is generally healthy. But it may not be a bad idea to get a regular physical done to make sure all is well, but that's completely optional. Congratulations again!
I just went and got my check up at Planned Parenthood and the woman said it's not necessary until 3 years after you start having sex.
Don't know about the exam but just wanted to say that you and your hubby seem like wonderful people. Wish I could be a foster parent.
