Will the pill delay my period coming if i take it during the cycle?!

Question: hey, im not on the pill usually but my boyfriend has just surprised me with a sun holiday for the first week in april but thats when my period is due. Obviously id rather not have to deal with that on my holiday. If I take the pill now will it delay my period untill I'm home again...i wouldnt be using it for contaceptive purposes, just to delay my period! plz help

If you don't actually wish to use the pill as a contraceptive, then there is a pill which can just delay your periods. It is called norethisterone. You take 5mg tablets 3 times a day, starting 3 days before the anticipated period and then until you wish to restart a period.

Obviously, if you don't intend on having a family any time soon, it would be worthwhile seeing your GP at a later stage to discuss your options for contraception.

You could get the 3 month injection - it's called Depo Provera - and it will stop your period by then. You might get some spotting, but no period. There are also some pills you can take continuously (e.g. so you don't get your period for a month.) Go and see your GP now so you can be prepared in time.

If you had been on the pill for several months, it probably would have worked. However, because you would be just starting it now, you wouldn't skip one normally as you wouldn't have been on it for a whole cycle.
You don't have enough time really to do anything to prevent it because it's only a week away.
Maybe speak to your doctor right away and see if there's anything they can suggest to try.
Good luck.
