I don't think there is any other way to tell, besides the bleeding, whether the hymen has broken. An ob/gyn can tell, but an ordinary person probably can't. Your partner would have to be some kind of expert, because hymens come in all kinds of shapes, thicknesses, etc. I don't think he would know what he was looking at--if he looked--and I'm sure he couldn't tell by feel, since women can be tight (or less tight) for all kinds of different reasons.
