Can a parent ask a doctor if their daughter is a virgin?!

Question: I'm getting put on birth control because my periods are too heavy and too long, etc etc. They set up an appointment for me to get a pap smear before i get put on birth control and i was wondering if they could tell my mom if i'm a virgin or not. If she asks the doctor, could they tell them? I'm 15 and i live in california. Thanks:)

No, your doctor will not answer a question like that. It does not matter that you are only 15, there are laws that protect your confidentiality. What goes on between you and your doctor, stays between you and your doctor unless you tell your doctor it is OK to discuss these things with some one else. I work for a health care provider that offers birth control services to patients under the age of 18. This is something lots of girls worry about but they don't have anything to worry about since laws are in place to protect them. If you would like to learn more about these laws, google HIPPA.

they can because your underage. unless you take yourself to planned parenthood and do it all by yourself.

A parent can ask, but this is the sort of question that, when asked of me, would definitely get the double-talk non-answer. Whether or not I knew (via exam or patient conversation) that a patient was NOT a virgin, I would definitely tell the parents that there's really no way to know, blah blah blah.

I figure answering that question honestly is bad for two reasons...

<> violating patient trust and confidence, which is essential for a patient-gynecologist relationship

<> nothing good is going to come of such an answer anyway.

Good parents need to have a relationship with their children such that such a question isn't necessary for a third party.

yes they can cause you are underage

Well it depends are you a virgin or not?? If I wasn't a virgin then i'd be worried!
I am a virgin though so..

The Dr. will not be able to tell if you are a virgin or not. he will be able to tell if your hymen is intact. Because it is not does not mean your not a virgin. If can be broken in many ways that have nothing to do with sex. Horseback riding, strenuous physical activity are just a few. Also not all women have them. A few are born without them. He can tell them if you have a hymen but not if you are a virgin because he cannot tell.

If you lived in Canada, they couldnt. I dont know about the states. Its like medical battery here, it breaks the doctor-patient code

no . by law, a doctor can not . especially if u ask them not to. the same exact thing happened to my friend. she asked the doctor not to tell. and her mother asked the doctor if my firend was a virgin. her doctor said that she was not able to tell but the mother could ask her daughter.
