Menopause can make you gain weight around your waist. Doctors don't really understand why it happens to be at the waist, but estrogen seems to determine where fat is deposited. Since you don't have as much estrogen, that can change. You also gain weight more in general in menopause. Your metabolism slows down from the changing hormone levels, so you may need to increase your exercising--what worked before won't work as well now. You'll likely need more aerobic exercise than you used to. You may also need to cut out more calories.

I had this happen to me as well, after I had a complete hyterectomy. I was only 25 when I had it, so it's a bit of a bummer to be 30 with a post-menopausal shape, but it's possible to avoid the weight gain--your waist will always be thicker than it was, but you can still weigh the same as you used to.
