no. it doesn't hurt, as long as you put it in ALL the way and properly. it might feel a bit weird when puilling it out, but as soon as you get used to tampons you'll love them. you cant even tell its there if you put it in properly.
don't start off with jumbo or supersized or anything even if you have a heavy flow - get slim fit or regulars to start with. change it more often, and when you feel you're ready to use bigger ones go for it.

because you can buy them in combo boxes that way you can try afew different sizes until you get it right

please dont start off with large or jumbo cause those would hurt
it will hurt if you insert them incorrectly and if ur not relaxed. if ur tense, ur muscles in ur vagina will also conrtact. so stay relaxed. try this at home first. make sure that ur on ur period, nd don't try to insert a tampon when ur not on ur period. this is bad news.

I just tried using a tampon for the first time a few days ago!
It didn't hurt at all, thing is I couldn't get it in lol! Next month i'm gonna try again :D
It's ok. Just relax and don't tense up.
It will not hurt, the only thing you'll feel is maybe that it just feels weird because your not used to it.
Good luck, you probaly won't get it on your first try, I know I didn't lol!
