Birth control and emotional problems?!

Question: Can birth control (even low hormone doses such as Ortho Lo which I am on) cause personality changes?

I have been with the same man for 2 years and for about one of those years have been on Ortho Lo. I THINK I have noticed mood changes (definitly more emotional and somewhat emotionally psycho during PMS - which I always has emotions during PMS but I think it has gotten worse).

But I have been on it so long I almost forget how I was before.
My precious boyfriend suggested that I get off of it to see how I feel and we just not have sex for a while... he said that "me feeling like me" is more important...

But I am afraid that WHAT IF we slip up and decide to have sex... I know the pill or other forms of BC are way better in protecting from pregnancy than condoms or other methods.

So what have your experiences been with Birth Control altering your mood/personality/emotions/depression?

I've had no problems really with my pills altering my mood. On top of that we've used spermicide for several years and not used any other form of birth control and I've not gotten pregnant since we had our youngest 4 years ago. So if used properly it's quite safe. I suffer from chronic depression anyway and was kind of hoping the pill would help. I don't expect it to, because I know they can affect your mood. You could try to go off it and see what happens. Try combining condoms and spermicide and then you'll be doubly safe. Like I said, spermicide alone has worked well for us for 4 years.

Hormones of all types influence mood from time to time in different ways. It is a good suggestion to try other BC measures and see if you can determine if there are any mood triggers.

I was on and off birth control pills for 15yrs. and yes they do change your mood. I've been on different types because of the different side affects that they give you. If you think that they are giving you problems you should go to the Dr. and see about trying another one. If you want to stop all together then you should try other safe methods for about 2 months to see a difference in your personality. I even had one pill that had me almost suicidal. It's a trial and error with your hormones. Don't let the pill get the best of you. There are many different pills out there for you, you don't have to settle for just the one kind.

In general it is recommended change contraception every 3-5 years to help body to come back to the
