...wow...your girl's 11 and worried about her first period...first of all she shouldn't worry but look forward to it as the beginning of womanhood & "growing up"...

...as a mother you can explain that your own monthly period is a natural & wonderful part of being a woman...never refer to it as the "curse" or degrade it...

...girls generally start puberty somewhere from 9 to 16...and begin by breast development followed by pubic hair...after a period of time, usually a year or so her period may start...it may start as only a few drops of blood at first or start with some flow of blood...but not that much at first...generally a young girl may have only 3-4 periods her first year...but there are no hard & fast rules for all girls...eventually she will develop a "monthly" period as she grows up...

...the reason a girl bleeds during her period is because her body is at a stage where hormones from different parts of the body prepare the body for pregnancy...blood is absorbed into the uterous each month preparing for pregnancy...when pregnancy doesnt happen this blood is sloughed (shed) off & this is her period...with young girls it usuallly lasts only a few days to begin with...

...she may have no prior warning at all for her first few periods...most just notice a few drops of blood or a small flow that she has never had before... or she may have some of the symptoms most girls develop which may include cramps, bloating, headaches, soreness or swelling of breasts and mood changes such as sadness, irritibility or depression...

..also she should have familiarity of feminine-hygiene supplies...such as pads & later tampons...

...usually a young girl should start with a pad as comfortable as possible and change it as necessary...a young girl's pelvic & vagina are still growing so a tampon may come at a later date depending on her growth & peer pressure from what other girls her age are using...

...your daughter should know that her first period may come at any time after she starts puberty & a good reminder is to keep a small pad in a wrap in her purse & locker at school...if it starts at an awkward time inform your mom, the school nurse or other adult woman she trusts...

...i hope this helps any young teen who needs some info on her development into a young woman...

...the following site is a help for her to read alone, with you as her mom or even with friends...

I'm 15, and my symptoms were sore boobs, and I had a lot of vaginal discharge. Hope this helps :)

Honestly I started my period at 10 and I don't remember any warning signs at all.

This is just my opion but you dont have a daughter because your other question was asking when you would get yours. They symtoms are tiredness (might not be a word..) discharge, sore breasts, cramping in some cases.

I'm 17 and my period was very bad but I'm not saying your daughters is going to be!..i had very bad stomach cramps and i had a very sore back for like an hour but then all went away when i got my period i was 11..usually some teens get some pain in there lower back or stomach pain and that's how they know there getting there period!..i hope i helped..good luck
