HPV shot for teenage girls?!

Question: how safe is this shot? My daughter just had her first dose a month ago and is scheduled to get the next two in the next few months. Is it safe? Cervical cancer runs in my family and my daughter is 14 almost 15,and so far as I know not sexually active, but we all know how that goes. Should I have done this or not? She had the shot after the doc asked if she has a history of cancer that the HPV virus causes, and said she should have it.Men can carry this and pass it onto you and that is how it is spread and how you get it, but should kids be getting this shopt at such a young age,and can it cause them to get it?

I got the shot recently (I'm 25 and cervical cancer runs in my family too) and was so scared that it would cause me to get it! Definitely a good idea to get it while they are young, those early years can be the most crucial when bad decisions about sex are more frequent.

I'm very proud of you for being the kind of parent that sees this as a solid preventative measure and not approval for your child to have sex. My mom didn't put me on birth control despite the fact that she was a nurse and knew it would help my periods which were absolutely miserable. She thought it would give me permission to be sexually active and her selfishness and ignorance cost me years of pain and agony. P.S. I didn't lose my virginity until I was in college and almost 19 because my dad was more "You'll know when you're ready, just make it count and above all, respect yourself. You have so much to offer"

my friend actually got the hpv virus or a strand of it and i went with her to the doctor and the shot is very safe...but it doesnt protect agaisnt all strands of the virus but i would def recommend getting it!

Given that you have a family history of cervical cancer, I think you made the right decision to have her receive the vaccine. No the vaccine will not cause her to get cervical cancer. And yes, girls at that age should be getting the vaccine...the sooner the better. Since the disease cannot be detected in males, a girl can become infected with it the very first time she has sex. The vaccination guards against that.

I personally think it's better to buy your daughter some condoms rather than giving her a shot to protect her from STDs. She may get the wrong idea and assume that if she goes on birth control she won't need to use condoms.

Besides, it's only been out for a little while. I'd wait to make sure there aren't any major, adverse side effects. If cervical caner runs in your family, it could be due to something other than the type of HPV you get from having sex. It's not the only cause of cervical cancer, and the vaccine does not protect against cervical cancer that is not caused by the particular type of HPV the vaccination is for.

Google "Gardasil vaccinations for HPV" This will give you a lot of good information from all different points.
