Paragard... your thoughts on IUDs (AKA IUC)?!

Question: I am quite possibly getting it in the next few weeks due to my issues with my current birth controll. I have had horror stories with low dose OCs, I spot on the regular OCs, I spotted while on the patch and liek most I have the tendancy to forget.

My mother had an IUD years and years ago and my best friend has Mirena now. I have my consultation tomorrow and I know the details, I know how it's done, and I know the plus side as well as a few of the down sides.

I just want to hear from anyone who HAS at one point had the IUC (AKA IUD). Not from people who don't unless there is some legitimate medical explanation on why they chose to opt against it.

How bad did it hurt when it was inserted?
How long did it hurt afterward?
When you had your pd, were the cramps worse?
For how long?
Did your pds become longer, shorter, no change?
Did you have it removed and why?
How painful was the removal?
How has it made your life better or worse?

I am 24 so only mature answers please.

HI!
After i had my second child 2 years ago i had Paraguard inserted. For me it has been phenomenal! There was no pain when the nurse put it in, more like a pinch of the tissue. It didnt even hurt afterward the only thing i was worried about was when the nurse told me i might be dizzy afterwards and to take care when i stood up, i was fine no dizziness or pain...the nurse was alot more excited than i was when she said "You can start having sex tonight"! Ha..(keep in mind i had just had my son..)When my period came it lasted around 7 days (3 was normal for me) was heavier than normal and i had severe cramps (but nothing that advil and a heating pad didnt cure) After i had Paraguard in for 3 months my period came at the normal time, was normal flow and NO CRAMPS! im serious to this day i have no cramps with my period...I still have Paraguard and since it lasts 10 years, i have 8 to go unless we decide to have another child. Paraguard has made my life amazing. I dont have to think about birth control anymore. Just remember to check for your string every month. About the Mirena IUD my sister, cousin and sister in law have had it. They ALL had mood swings, weight gain, NO sex drive, periods that lasted 8 to 15 days, killer cramps and generally no energy. I know Mirena has hormones so i dont know if thats what causes the changes. They dont understand why mine is working out so well for me and i really dont know what to say. All three of them have had Mirena removed after around a year of having it. Two of them got pregnant very soon after having it removed. The Paraguard has worked fantastic for me. Also i read that copper kills sperm too..an added side effect i guess...I am 24 also and have never had a problem with my IUD. Hope this helps..Btw have you had a child? The insertion is nothing compared to that! Good luck!

I had an IUD placed after the birth of my second child. The insertion was uncomfortable, but not painful, and afterward I cramped for a few hours. There was no waiting period to have intercourse, I could do it the same day. My periods weren't any different, no more cramping than usual. I had the IUD removed after 3 years because I didn't need it anymore. Removal was uncomfortable, slight pinching sensation, but no after effects. I hope this helps...
