Enlarged thyroid?!
Question: A trip to the doctor Monday got me wondering . Enlarged thyroid? What is a the purpose of my thyroid? Is there any reason why it is enlarged or is that just something that happens? Side effects of this ? I have to go for an ultrasound in three weeks .. will anything have to be done if I do actually do have an enlarged thyroid?

The thyroid gland regulates the body metabolism--weight control temperature control, as well as mental and behavioral aspects.
Check your neck:
If swelling is irregular you may have thyroid nodules that must be checked out.
In many cases the blood test done to check the thyroid function.
Some food is believed to cause the enlarged thyroid, but it is too early to say anything before the blood test/ultrasound result.
I have an enlarged thyroid its just large I went through every test out there. Now every time a doctors touches my throat they get this look on there face so I always have to tell them. Good luck hopefully its nothing just like mine.
thyroiditis, hashimotos thyroiditis are two causes of the enlarged thryoid. you don't miss it until you don't have it! without it you are cold, constipated, achy, insomniac...an ultrasound will look for nodules. check the mayo clinic for more info on all of it...and if things progress to the point someone discusses surgery, etc,,, go to www.thyca.org for info- it is a thyroid cancer site, but they have great info on surgeons, and treatments and endos. good luck.
