Women~ when did you start your period, or your daughers?!

Question: My eldest daughter is 8 and going through all the hormonal changes. She's been wearing deodorant for two years now and I've been blessed with the mood swings. (I'm adapting her) talked to her grandmother who said both her and her great grandmother started at 9 years old. She has an older sister who is 9 but hasn't started hers. I was 11 and my sister was like 15.... other questions.... how do you explain this to an 8 year old? Are their minds mature enough to keep up with their bodies? Thanks for entertaining my curiosity!

I got my period when I was 13 years old; I was of average/slender build at the time.
One thing that may be quite helpful--if your daughter has her own (or shared!) bathroom, stock it with feminine supplies...Ultra-thin pads, individually-wrapped packs of "to-go" pantiliners, "Slender-regular" tampons, etc...Personally, when I got my period for the first time, I was nearly mortified to have to ask my mom for "supplies". I also recommend the Judy Blume book: 'Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret'.
A way to explain it to your daughter is to tell her (or casually mention) that a lot of girls are getting their periods younger & younger these days, and reassure her it is not highly unusual!
I think that at age 8 she'll probably respond positively to this as their egos can be really sensitive, as you probably are very aware of! I would also get her a discreet small bag (ie: a cosmetic bag), put some pantiliners and pads in it, & encourage her to keep it in her backpack "just in case" (literally!).

I got mine when I was 11.

i am sure she will be fine

maybe ask if she knows ny thing already

coz she may.
you have to tell ny way, maybe tell both daughters at the same time , so both them can get an understanding and then for them to talk to eacho ther also =]

I started mine at 11 too. When my mom gave me "the talk" I was about 10 already, and even then I didn't understand half the things she was saying. I'm not sure when it comes to an 8 year old... maybe just give it a shot and try to just explain to her what's happening with her body. Or maybe get some preteen books that explain your hormones changing and body developement. Good luck.

I got mine when I was the ripe old age of 9. Give her the book "Are You There God, It's Me, Margret". Then after she's read it, ask her if there are any questions she might have.

i got mine when i was almost 13. just sit her down and try to explain things as simply as possible and be there to answer any questions she may have.

dont get offended, but is your daughter overweight? they say when children are overweight there bodies mature faster, i was 15, i was pretty skinny kid, everbody is different. just explain how the doctor would, kids are smart, theyll understand.

i was 11, and in 6th grade. it was mortifying, and always tricky to sneak "goods" to the bathroom without anyone seeing.

i started mine when i was 13. I remember the school talked to us about sex ed in the 4th grade.. i had no idea about anything until then.

well if she is mature she should understand.
i started when i was 12 on July 4th. bad day haa.
but she is pretty young.
good luck momma =]

I am a mother who never get time alone so often my children enter into the bathroom without notice. I just simple explain to them that women have this time of month were they have to take special care of their private part. Once my daughter get older I explain more depth of why this happens but for know she is only four and I do not feel it is right time. I believe it is always good to start early on explaining thing to children. I would explain to her know before it starts so she know what to expect and what method are available to her. I would also explain why this happens, so she has a understanding. When we were growing up stuff was a lot more private but know days kid are a lot more open. I start when I was 11.

that is really early, i would take her to the doc to make sure she is okay. kids are starting really early lately though, its because of the foods with hormones in it- causes kids to grow up faster.

i started using deoderant when i was 10 or 11.
I started my period when i was 13

I was twelve and my daughter was thirteen

i was 12
