Should I trust the results of a HPT?!

Question: I am a pill user (Lo-Ovral) for over 5 years and I take it at the same time everyday and my periods have always been quite regular. I am a day and half late this month and I took a First Response today. It was negative. I have been under lots of stress lately due to grad school so that could be a factor. Should I trust the result? One of my girlfriends said if I was on the pill and got a negative result it was a pretty sure thing. But I'd like to hear from others. Thank you.

When was the last time you had intercourse? If you haven't missed any pills, and your HPT was taken at least several days to a week after intercourse...you should be okay. Those tests are very accurate, not 100%, but close.

Stress could be a factor. When you do a HPT, first urine of the day is most accurate because the hcg level is most concentrated at that time.

You can do another test (first urine of the morning) just for peace of mind.

Good Luck...and good luck with school too!

They are 99% accurate. You will probably start tomorrow.

Most HPT's are very reliable now. You can check the reliability of the one you used online or probably on the packaging. If you have been on birth control for five years and have not missed taking any pills recently, then I would guess that your "late" period is stress related. Actually, you shouldn't consider your period "late" until you are more than a week late. I've never had a negative result that was really positive and I've never had a positive result that was really negative. I've got three kiddos, so I've been there a few times. Good luck! If you're still freaking out (and haven't started) in a couple days, see a doctor or go to Planned Parenthood and see what they have to say. If you are sexually active and NOT using protection against STDs, this could be your problem, too! Even if you're on the pill, make sure your bf uses a condom. Every man will tell you you're his ONLY woman, but always trust that your bf has been with at least one woman before you and may have infected you with something that came from the PREVIOUS chica. HPV and Herpes can be spread anytime after infection, even years later. So, bottom line, get checked if you haven't started within a few days. Did I get a little rant-ish there or what? :)

typically YES.

While the First Response Pregnancy Test is extremely accurate, many factors may lead to an inaccurate pregnancy test result. Among these factors are:

* Medications that may contain hCG
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_chori...
(lo-ovral seems to be free of hCGs)
* Miscalculating your due date
* Failure to adequately saturate the test stick tip
* Over saturating the test stick tip
* Failure to lay the test flat while waiting for the test results to process

If you think your pregnancy test result is wrong, wait three days and retake the test, or visit with your health care professional.

I (non professional) really think your ok.
you must not have missed many times before have you?
I've known plenty of women that have been late esp when taking "pills"

p.s. my girlfriend was two days late this time around (no meds)

Almost certainly stress related, though there can be other medical causes. A day and a half is not much variation, so I wouldn't think there's much to worry about (though I realise it will be upsetting if you're not used to it). If you're concerned, you should visit your GP; but it's virtually certain that you're not pregnant.

You may also find that your periods have simply become more irregular than they used to be - this happened with my wife also and she found it similarly disturbing at first. So bear in mind that this may happen again next month, and try not to stress out about it too much. Grad school is enough stress for anyone!
