Hi there, dont be afraid of telling your mum,she gets them too.Just get her by herself and say,"mum,Ive started my period and I thought you should know",I'm sure she has been expecting it and as its very normal she will be only too pleased to talk to you about it and give you any advice you need.Remember your mum is your best friend and you can tell her anything. She will probably be more upset or hurt if you dont confide in her. Take care and go and talk to your mum.
Just write her a note, that's what I did. Just write "Mom, got my period, mind picking up some pads at the store for me? -Yourname".

I know how you feel i was totaly freeked b4 i told my parents- and i live with mr Grandma!!! It was really hard. It's important to tell your mom. It'll be easier to get the supplies you need. Just remember that she was once your age, getting her first period, so she knows this territory well. Also she is your mom so dont totaly freek just call your mom into your room and casally tell her she will prolly be very happy 4 u.
just tell her flat out "momi went to the bathroom and there was blood" shell ask u if u started and u say "yes" thats wat i did, then it stopped and i told her then it started again then i didn't tell her, i endined up clogging the toilet then HAVING to tell her, dont worry its not a big deal, i thought i was the only one who had it, then it turned out all my friends did and just didn't tell you, GOOD LUCK :D

hahah id say non-confrontal. if you feel uncomfortable talking to her face, write pads on the grocery list or something, and if she asks just say ya. but im sure she'd understand because its not like you decided to have it. it just happened on its own. we cant control that, so she'll be more than willing you buy you pads
