Why could I be having a period every two weeks?!

Question: About a month after I had my baby, I started a low dose birth control pill. I took it for two months, but my doctor switched me to a full dose (Femcon Fe) because I was having a period every two weeks (one when I was supposed to, and another in the middle of the pack of pills). However, I have continued to have a period every two weeks like this, and now it has been happening for six months. I just stated a new pack, and I am going to call my doctor if it happens again. In the mean time, this has been pretty draining on me physically. I am just getting impatient, and curious, though, as to what causes this sort of thing. I tried doing internet searches but couldn't find anything about why I would have a period every two weeks while actively taking birth control.

Periods that are too frequent (more often than every 28 days also called "metrorrhagia") can be related to several predisposing factors:

If the periods are otherwise normal, then a short "luteal phase" or insufficient ovarian production of progesterone may be responsible. If the periods are inconsistent, then failure to ovulate and the resulting anovulatory bleeding may be responsible. If the periods are actually normal and once a month, but there are episodes of bleeding in between the periods, then mechanical factors such as fibroids or polyps may be responsible. Women with hyperthyroidism are classically described as experiencing frequent, heavy periods. They, in reality, rarely show that pattern, but we usually screen these patients for thyroid disease anyway.

Early stages of pregnancy might be a possible cause as well, but it could happen if you change your eating habits, are stressed, have a lot on your mind, etc. Our emotions and hormones collide a lot.

I've experienced frequent periods too in the past that was caused by ovarian cysts.

There could be other causes for the frequent periods you are experiencing and I would recommend you see your doctor/gyno for further evaluation to see what they think could be causing this.

Good luck :)

The pituitary gland controls many hormonal cycles, including this one. You need to talk to a female dr that can observe you. Don't be afraid. You must take care of it, you could get anemias. Switch drs. This is a common thing. You could also try Eastern medicine...go to as many drs you need to until you get the answer you deserve.

It must be pretty miserable for you.

Try using yellow tampons, they are good for sunny periods.

Go to the doctor and asked to put you a different pill
