Why are women so caught up with losing weight and what size they are?!

Question: I don't really understand this. Granted, I have had my moments in highschool. Back then I was thinner but hate myself and my look. Now I am a bit more plump but and more comfortable wtih myself. I guess I just attribute it to maturity.
But I dont understand how so many women from their teens on are so consumed with their weight. Its all about numbers for some reason, how much they weigh, their clothing size, how big their boobs are. But does it really all matter? Isn't there more to life than going to the gym for 2 hours a day 7 days a week, counting calories, and worrying about fitting into a decades old pair of jeans?

Well honestly, look in the media, look at todays role models for girls, most of them weigh 100lbs soaking wet!! Working out and staying in shape is a great thing, but if you live an active lifestyle you shouldnt have to go to the gym regularly. look at Marlyn Monroe, she was a sz 16 and even now she is still a sex symbol. the thin obsessed media started in the 70's when Twiggy (actuall name of model) came into the spotllight, then it became the thing to be thin, problem was it was the 70's and most people were thin from being strung out on drugs..... Now is not much diffrent, just more coverups, look at Lohan,Spears,Hilton.... Peer presure from the media, and what the media thinks is sexy, with no room for indiffrence. It's funny cause women are not made to look like they do in the media, we are made to carry, birth and care for children, that requires extra weight on the hips, bum and boobs. Somewhere allong the lines people forgot that.
There is more to life than all of that crap, and you have to love yourself before you can love others, I mean loving your true self, not loving someone you want to be.

I don't know either. Im in highschool and I dont understand why other girls are like that. I'm not stick thin but I'm healthy and happy with my body. They're so consumed with there apperence it seems that is their only thought that they have all day...how many calories are in this, how much fat is in that. They watched one girl eat a cookie and said 'ew, do you know how much fat is in that?'

Just one girl saying that can transform other girls' thought and make them self concious. The society is corrupt in the fact that it feels other people's thoughts about you should impact the fact that you are happy, and should take over your own thoughts and actions.

well it is kinda in a womans nature to try to look as feminine as possible so we can attract men
A lot of that is instinct inside women that makes us want to be sexy.
i think it is very much just in our nature not really a choice thing or a superficial thing (for some women it can be)

hopefully a woman should only be concerned about her weight for health reasons.

i love to excercie too, thing is i like eating (of course i portion control). I'm 16, and at high school, everyone is so cruel, not to me bcuz im not that big (just have low self esteem and think i am huge) but other girls chubbier than me. idk people are retarded and in the world we live in people think you have to look perfect to fit in.
xoxo.
