Yeast infection, what happens during the doctors diagnostic exam?!

Question: I'm only 14, and I think that I have a yeast infection, caused by a course of antibiotics. I've had symptoms for about 4 years but I really don't get on with my mum and so have not told. I have made a doctors appointment for tomorrow but I just want to know what happens, on all the web pages that I've looked at it ways that youhave to have a pelvic exam. Is this true, of so, will it be done in the same appointment, or will I have to make a separate appointment, and what happens, is it painful or are there anyother useful things that you can tell me.

Thanks,
AJ

It is unusual to give a 14 year old a pelvic exam without very good reason and I can't see it would be particularly helpful here. It does show once more, that doctors should also be damned sure they have a good reason for using an antibiotic in the first place. If an HVS has not yet been checked, and more than one should have been done by now, a swab should be taken, but this is not even uncomfortable.

If it does show fungus then a prolonged course of anti-fungals, followed by reintroduction of lactobacilli, using live natural yogurt, either on a tampon, if you already use these, or instilled with a syringe (NO needle!) should fix it.

Depends on your doctor. They might do a pap smear or just make you pee in a cup. Either way then they will test your results and let you know if you have a yeast infection or not. They will prescribe meds if you do.

Yeast infections aren't really a big deal, typically they're cured with a cream like insert...
But I kinda doubt you've have one for 4 years, maybe something else is wrong with you.

if you are going to a family doctor, he will probably sent you to a gynocologist for the exam. its not bad. they just examine you. go to a female doc if you are nervous.

first, you said you had symptoms of a yeast infection for four years. did you mean four days? if not, it's not a yeast infection...it could be something else.
the doctor will give you a pelvic exam. he will likely insert a small metal or plastic tool into your vagina and spread it open. then he will use what looks like a Q-tip, to scrape the inside and put those cells under a microscope. It doesn't really hurt, but it is quite uncomfortable. It's really fast, don't worry too much about it...the best thing to do is relax as much as possible...the more tense you are, the more it hurts...just relax and remember to breath!!! it'll be over in a few seconds.

good luck!

Well if it's your first visit to the gyno they might want to do a pelvic exam first. I went to an urgent care place for thrush (yeast infection) and it was very quick. A nurse practitioner took a little sample and came back several minutes later to confirm that it was a yeast infection. She prescribed an oral anti-fungal called Diflucan. You take it one time and usually it works within 24 hours. If it doesn't, you go back and get another one. For me, it flushed the infection out at once. Very gross.

Not painful at all, maybe just uncomfortable but try and relax while its happening, if its for a yeast infection all your doctor will do is look at the area, usually they know, there could be redness or discharge, depends on the doctor really, but if you do get a pelvic exam, as i said its painless, takes no time at all and will be done on same day as appointment.

If you're having these problems and there ongoing, you do need to check with your Dr. For lots of women their are many factors for infection...tampons, nylon undergarments and as you've stated the use of antibiotics. Normally a urine sample is sufficent. But I would try pads during your period (non-scented), and cotton underwear. See how that helps via provention.

i am 15 and i had to go through this about 3 weeks ago...i was scared and nervous as well. But the doctor will take this plastic exame thing and insert it inside you.....it does not hurt....but be sure to ask for the small one. then the doctor takes this thing that kinda looks like a long Q-tip and it look a little pointy and he will juss rub it along the inside of you and thats it. it does not hurt at all and once its over you are a-okay :) good luck

First of all well done AJ for taking care of yourself and your medical needs (sorry about your Mum) You are obviously very mature and well informed. Try not to worry about your visit to the doctors - I have had the same problem a few times (always after a treatment of antibiotics) sometimes it required a pelvic exam where a swab (which I didn't even feel) was taken and other times I just got a prescription - either way it is never as bad as you think it will be. Good luck

Hi, I take it this will be your first appt. to a gynocologist. They will do a pelvic exam/pap smear. It does not really hurt just unconfortable for a few seconds. You should be having these done anyway every year. As for the yeast infection. You say you have had it for 4 years??? Thats a super long time. But if it is just a regular yeast infection the dr. will tell you to buy some over the counter stuff and thats it. You will most likely be cured. Just make sure you keep up with these appts every year. They can save your life. Good luck
