Yasmin Birth Control?!

Question: I am 20 years old and have been on Yasmin for 6 months now. In the past 6 months I have gained 30 pounds, become more irritable and depressed, among other things. I want to lose the weight, and be back to my normal, happy self. The doctor who prescribed me Yasmin just left to continue up in her career and I am currently between doctors. I have been seriously considering stopping my pills and not getting on any other pill. My boyfriend and I have always used condoms, and I am considering just going back to that. I have tried two brands and I just don't feel like myself when I am on the pill. Do you think my side effects are worth giving up the pills for good? If I do stop, how long will it take on average for it to get out of my system? Thank you in advance.

I had a similar thing happen to me. But I was on Loette. It made me more depressed and i gained a little bit of weight, but not much (thank you genetics!), and yes, much, much more irritable. It's like "well, you can have sex without getting pregnant by taking this pill which will make you unhappy, less attractive and generally not want to have as much sex!", bit ironic, really :) After 18 months i took myself off the pill because i was "battling depression", as they say, and I feel a lot better off it. That said, it is no fun having a late period and thinking you are pregnant for two weeks! I would say try a low oestrogen/higher progesterone pill. Progesterone is just as effective for contraception but it affects the body less negatively. Generally with less weight gain and smaller mood changes. So if you haven't tried a high progesterone pill, maybe you should try that one next! ;) I do not know how long it takes to get it out of your system though, sorry. Maybe you should trial going off the pill for a few months and monitor the way you feel and then make an assessment about how worth it being on the pill is. Sorry for the analytical answer -I'm an engineer ;)

It doesn't take too long for it to get out of your system. Taking the pill is a personal choice as far as birth control goes.

I tried 10 different brands before I found one that worked for me. I grew tired of the side effects and we used that method until I had my tubal done. It's fine if you want to use condoms.

It's your body & you're the one who has to deal with the symptoms from the pill.

Yasmin is a good contraception but if you don't feel comfortabe - better stop it. Condom is also very good contraception. After Yasmin in general your hormonal status will come back immediately or after 1-2 cycles (different depending on personal hormones).
