Tubal Ligation in a Teenager?!

Question: I am 17 years old and I've been on BCPs ever since I got my period (when I was 11). It's been 5 years and I just got this book called "Sexy Hormones"...it's all about BCPs and the effects they have on the human body and other external hormones sources. I have had to change my pill 5 times in the last 5 years due to various complications (estrogen headaches, chest pain, SEVERE blood clot risk) and this book basically tells about all the terrible things that long-term BCP usage will do. I've been considering getting tubal ligation done when I'm 18, but I don't know much about HOW the surgery is done or the effects afterwards.
I want to get some eggs removed so I can become pregnant later in life if I so choose, but I want to be period/pregnancy free for now. Anyone who's had it done (or is a doctor who does them), I would love some insight from you! I saw things about decreased libido and other bad post-surgery effects...are these common/imminent?

I use to have extremely painful periods when I was a teen. Vomiting, not able to get out of bed, serrious cramps, ect.

In my 20's I began to outgrow that. The sypmtoms got to be less and less every year. I'm in my 40's now. It's nothing but a minor annoyance, and some slight cramping, and ocassionaly having some certain food oder make me nausiated. Everything is extremely minor.

Please concider NOT getting tubal ligation. I'm not sure how an 18 year old would manage to pay to have her eggs harvested, and then stored for years until you decided you wanted to become pregnant.

I also have a hard time imagining you are going to find a doctor who would be willing to do that procedure on a teenager.

Please wait until you are 25. If at that point you are still having horrible problems, go ahead and have the procedure done.

A post surgery thing to serriously concider is the merca infection. Rare, but still something to serriously concider. I worked for a Dermatologist for 8 years. One of our patients, a very tiny woman, of about 4'9" and 80 pounds went in for a C-section to deliver her baby. She was so tiny, they didn't think she could have the baby normally.

The day after a nurse was wheeling her in a wheelchair. The patient said she "felt funny," and was holding her stomach. She passed out, the nurse lifted her gown, to make sure she wasn't hemoraging....she was holding her intestines, as the C-section had completely opened up, due to the merca bacteria. The patient died several days later.

Surgeries are not to be entered into lightly these days.

If you do want to get pregnant when you get it, save some eggs and you'll have to get a c-section.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!

You have been on birth control since you were 12?????

UN CAFRIGGIN, BELIEVABLE.

Sex is for adults, NOT CHILDREN.

Should you actually find an IDIOT doctor that would give you a tubal ligation at 18 he or she should be disbarred.

Trust me when I say YOU WOULD BE INCREDIBLY SORRY, SOONER OR LATER.

Tubal ligation is a very serious surgery, it is far more invasive then a vasectomy is for a man, and it is usually not reversible. If you want to have children in the future, I would not recommend this procedure for someone who is so young. In vitro fertilization (which is what you would need to get, should you want to get pregnant later) has a very low success rate, it is highly invasive and it very often results in multiple birth pregnancies (I.e: twins, triplets etc..) There are alternatives, such IUDs, or Intra Uterine Devices, they are usually T shaped and your doctor vaginally inserts them into your uterus, There are two kinds:
A) Mirena IUD- a hormonal iud that releases a very low dosage of hormones called levongesteral (a synthetic progesterone based hormone) directly into your uterus (I have this one right now) every woman reacts differently to the iud, I personally have not had any side effects, accept for the loss of my period, which happened after about 8 months. The Iud stays in for up to 5 years and is more or less hassle free. When you go to the gyno once a year they check that it is still in place, and if need be do an ultrasound to be sure.
B) The copper IUD (Paragard's T 380a in the states, there are others in Britain)- a non hormonal IUD that has a copper wire wrapped around the length of the IUD, it is inserted much the same way as the mirena, and I believe it helps to limit your periods as well although unlike the mirena it doesn't stop them. This one can be left in for up to 10 years, and alot of women swear by them.
C) The Birth control shot (Depo provera) stops your period although I wouldn't recommend it as it has alot of nasty side effects.

Just talk to your doctor, to your friends and who ever else you trust and make sure that your are 200% sure it's what you want to do.
Good Luck

you will still have periods anyway.
