My sister told me she feels guilty about having her period?!

Question: My little sister is 13, and today she told me that she feels guilty whenever she has a period. I asked her why, and she says becasuse she feels like she is deniying a child the right to a life. That her period could have been a person. I have no idea why she feels this way, I explained to her that it is just an egg, not a person, but she knows that.
What should I say to her? Is it normal for people to think like that?
I'm 16

Every woman passes thousands of eggs through their lifetime. No woman can have thousands of babies. Also some eggs are 'bad' which means they will never be babies due to many reasons. Reasure her that you understand why she may feel like this and that many woman will feel like her.
Also if she has sex now inorder to get pregnant this could damage her emotionally and internally. This is why the legal age is 16. Her body is just preparing to get pregnant. Its practicing what will happen in years to come. She can get pregnant now but this is not why shes having periods. There is plenty of time for her to have babies.

Wow.... I've never heard of someone feeling like this....

It's just a normal body function, and unless she's having unprotected sex, there's no way that it could ever be a person. The lining gets shed because it's not being used.

I don't even know what can be said to that.... maybe she should sit and have a talk with the school nurse, or your mom.

Use a more grown-up explanation of what I told my boys when they were little -
Every month, God builds a nest in there [ your body builds up the lining of the uterus ]. If a baby doesn't come [ i.e. there is NO BABY ] then it [ the lining of the uterus ] dissolves, and flows out.
The 'period' is not a baby, but a 'nest' like sticks/twigs.
If she is thirteen, and menstruating - she could also be a little emotional/hormonal.

I think it's great that u took the time to talk to your sister so kudos to u! She is probably just confused and maybe a little bit upset at this time, so it is important to talk to her about it. I'm sure everything will be ok
