They aren't healthy if they are not used properly. And the theory that using them will take away your virginity is an old wives tale. "Virginity" is never having had sexual intercourse. Many of us lose our hymens during strenuous activity before we even have intercourse.

I can't use the average size tampons, myself, because I am shallow (and you asked about length in another question of yours, too). A friend suggested the Sport tampons by Playtex and they are perfect!

Start with the lightest and test them out. Women bleed differently during their periods. You may start off very heavy and slack off by the second day. There are multi-packs that come with Heavy and Regular absorbency for just this reason.

Remember that when you start to get really light, you should be careful about tampon use. It's not good pulling a tampon out that is dry!!! Painful and harmful to the inner walls.

I'm sorry that your mom isn't someone you can talk to about these things. I lost my mom when I was 11, right before I started my period, so I know a little of what you are going through. Still, I'm sure it hurts that you can't confide in her. *hugs!*

They are un-healthy, but only if you use them for other things like masturbating and things. Just read the directions on the box and you should get it. Good luck.

The higher the flow the bigger around, use the lowest possible absorbency, and you should be fine

Yes, tampons come in all different sizes and absorbencies and can be purchased at most convenience stores or supermarkets. Look on the boxes when you go and it will tell you the different sizes. (Down the same aisle as the pads). If you have a heavy flow you should buy higher absorbancy and if you have a light flow get smaller absorbancy tampons. Change the tampons anywhere from 2-6 hours depending on your flow to prevent TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) which can be fatal.

The size of the tampon has more to do with how much flow is expected than with the size of the vagina. Tampons come in different sizes. Women usually choose bigger sizes for heavy-flow days and smaller sizes for lighter-flow days. It's important to use the lowest absorbency needed to collect menstrual flow, and to change the tampon every three or four hours. This will help avoid infection and prevent a build-up of odor and stains.

A girl who's never used tampons before may find it easier to start with a smaller size. Tampons fit into most women's vaginas, but sometimes girls who are first beginning to use them have trouble inserting them. It's easier to insert a tampon when you are relaxed. It's also helpful to remember that the vagina doesn't go straight up into the body
