The OB/Gyn people recommend you see the gyno if you are sexually active OR by age 21. Since you are neither, you don't necessarily have to go. However, if you do go, ask them to use a pediatric speculum. It is much smaller and it won't hurt. All they do is take a scraping of your cervix to check for cervical cancer. This does not hurt because your cervix does not have much nerve innervation. But you might have some spotting (bleeding) afterwards. This should not last long. Good luck!

it can be uncomfortable but it wiull not hurt..
its alwys good to get a check up as even virgins can get things like fibroids etc ....

I strongly suggest that you try to understand that doctors are professionals. They see bodies all day long and believe me, from experience from having worked in the medical field for a long time, we are trained to see the person, not as a piece of which ever body we look at.
Trust me, at age 19 , there ought to be at least some checking that the doctor can do, for instance, he/she may do an abdominal exam (pushing on your tummy) and may even decide not to do an internal. It all depends upon if you are having any symptoms that you are concerned about.
Relax and you will be fine.

if you are not sexually active you do not need an exam and the doctor will not do one because you are a virgin. the doc will not break your hymen...it would be too painful and there is no need. you do not need a pelvic exam until you are sexually active even if you are 25 or 30. you really just need a general exam to make sure you are healthy unless you are having any problems.

Please go for a pap each year. I work for a gynecologist and we see women who go 20 years w/o a pap and a few of them have cervical cancer that could have been treated EASILY and because they didn't take the time to make this very important YEARLY appointment, the cancer spread and they are having chemo now.

I'm not trying to scare you, but prevention is key for all women.
It's not the most fun appointment, but it really is so important.

Good luck!!

You should probably just get it over with because it will come up again eventually. oh and if you act like your in a lot of pain they take there instruments out of you or if you act really scared they might not use them at all, but i recently had a pap smear where they open the clamp inside you and even though im not sexually active and pretty tight right now it wasnt too bad, dont worry about it.

My best friend was VERY nervous about her first visit at 20 also... but it's deff a good Idea! You don't have to be having sex to get cervical cancer!!!
Ask your doc to use a pediatric speculum (which is much smaller)... It is a bit uncomfortable no matter what; but just tell your doctor that it's your first pap and you are a virgin. Let them know AT ANY POINT if you are uncomfortable...
Also, request a female OBG... it'll help take some of the stress off of you!
Good luck! :)

If you aren't comfortable with a male OB-GYN, make the app't. with a female OB-GYN.

I'm sure no one is going to do anything more than they have to. Due to the fact you're concerned, ask Qs.

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Yes, that is my real last name!

Please, please, please go to a female. I am also a virgin and my female gynecologist had me get an ultrasound and I felt so violated afterwards having been poked at there by a man that I cried for a week. But with my gynecologist I just stared at the ceiling and took deep breaths. If you're tense the speculum will pinch, so stay relaxed and it shouldn't hurt, just be a bit uncomfortable. Distance yourself from the experience and you'll be fine. It's better than the dentist because you can actually talk and tell the doctor if it hurts.

haha I am too in the same boat and am also 19. No, my friend who also was said it wasn't bad at all. I wouldn't worry about it...even though I am too because yes I have heard horror stories lol. The doctor told me just to do it before I was 20 so everything would be ok down there, because you never know when you could get a pallop or w/e so I would go just to be on the safe side...and hey look at it this way at least your done for a year lol.

Why your mother decided to take you to gynecologist? Do you have any problems? Any complains?Any unusual symptoms?
If you are healthy with normal menstrual cycle and if you are not planning sexual activities - you don't need to go to gynecologist. Just you should know everything about your cycle and safe protected sex in case it would happen.
Speak with your mother and ask why she decided to take you to gynecologist. May Be she wants to know if you are virgin??? Just tell her the true. Tell her it would be more useful to visit gynecologist if you would have a boyfriend and if you would thing about starting sexual relations.
