Tampon issues...suggestions?!

Question: I've had my period for nearly 5 years now. I've been using pads every month and I've been trying to use a tampon every time I get my period. The problem is, I cannot get it in. I try to use the "lite" or "mini" size but it still doesn't work. The most I can get it in is about an inch and it hurts. Like hell. So I stop and say that I'll try next month. The tampons I am using are the cardboard applicator ones. Should I try the plastic ones? I'm just very annoyed because everyone I know uses tampons and I just can't seem to. Maybe I'm giving up too easily each time? What do you suggest?

Wow, a whole five years. I started using tampons 2 months after i had my first period when i was 11. Anyways, it hurt for me when i used cardboard. So my mom told me to use plastic, and it worked fine. But first try light plastic. I used Pearl and they slid right in. :)

If you still have trouble, put some vaseline or pretrolium jelly on the tip of tampon.

Also, most women do not know the structure inside of them. They think that it goes straight up and down, but actually goes horitantal towards your lower spine and buttox.

try plastic ones and u should relax. lie on ur back and open ur legs spread wide. maybe hold a mirror down there. if you are a virgin then its because u are breaking ur hymen which could be very thick. just relax and take ur time

Suggestion - use menstrual cups.

Long and short of it is that tampons are far from the best options in the world, you have more than twenty different menstrual options available to you so if tampons are such a problem it is probably time to accept that they are not for you and try different options.

Just because everyone else uses tampons does not mean you have to, make your own decision about what you want to use based on an educated choice.

I suggest menstrual cups because they are the most common alternative to tampons, they are cups that are inserted into the vagina to collect menstrual flow, they can be left in for up to 12 hours at a time without leaking or risk, this includes during sports, at night, during light flow and before your period is due, there are also other advantages such as being easier to use, very conveinient, cheap, environmentally friendly, body-positive and they have money back guarantees so if they don't work for you then you are not at a loss.

More information on menstrual cups can be found at the menstrual cup support site http://www.menstrualcups.org or at any of the brand web sites Divacup http://www.divacup.com Keeper http://www.thekeeper.com Mooncup http://www.mooncup.co.uk Ladycup http://www.ladycup.eu and Lunette http://www.lunette.fi or you may find softcups work better for you which are a type of menstrual cup but with a different shape http://www.softcups.com

Tampons are bad for vaginal health as they are unsafe and unhygienic - prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, give bacteria the perfect place to multiply, leave fibres within the vagina, dry out the vagina causing vaginal splitting, and contain chemicals, thus why tampons cause vaginal infections, toxic shock syndrome and have been linked to cancer, infertility, endometriosis and birth defects. See tampon health web site for more information - http://www.spotsite.org

Please if you do carry on trying with tampons don't use plastic applicators, tampons are a big envionronmental risk due to waste with the average woman using 12,000 tampons in her lifetime, and due to manufacturing where huge amounts of wood are wasted, extra energy is used when it is not needed, cotton used is not organic, harmful chemicals pumped into the environment and people flushing tampons when they are not supposed to be flushed. Adding plastic applicators is just adding to the environmental problem and they make no difference, an applicator is an applicator what it is made form makes no real difference to insertion.

It may be an idea to try non-applicator tampons, I know when I was a kid I used tampons and found using an applicator plain impossible - first time I used tampons, I used tampons right from day one, I was in agony due to not inserting correctly.

I'd suggest if you are going to use tampons of course make sure you are only trying to insert during full flow and using the lowest absorbancy first - you have this covered so no problems. It's a good idea to lay yourself back comfortably on your bed, perhaps putting down a towel first, resting your back on a pillow and keeping yourself relaxed insert the tampon - try lubrication too, if you don't want to go buy KYjelly to put on the end of the tampon try using olive oil insted in your vagina to lubricate, this is a safe lubrication and most people have it at home.

Top tip - masturbate - when aroused your vagina lengthens, widens, the muscles relax and your vagina self-lubricates, all this allows for easier penetration during sex but can of course be used to help easier penetration with a tampon too. If you are tense then your vaginal muscles will be tense, more so if this has been going on for a while because in your mind you will be thinking that inserting the tampon will be painful so you'll be tensing up.

Re-read the instructions too, sometimes people just assume they know how to do something, normally they are quite right but for some reason I've found that re-reading the instructions and taking it right back to basics works.

Basically think about it like sex, it's the same thing - penetration. If tensed up or not ready for penetration then it may be painful for you, it sounds as though your muscles are tightening up it may be down to something more health-related (if you have problems inserting anything else or if concerned then see your doctor), it could be mental if you have been victim of sexual abuse or if you have been raised in a home where you've been made to feel badly about your own body, chances are you are just stressing yourself out - relax.

I have also had this problem in the past. I found that the easiest thing is not to use a tampon with an applicator. I know this is not as nice but its much easier. Also, if it is hurting to try put the tampon in, maybe you put your finger in beforehand so you can see exactly the path that the tampon has to take, again i know this isn't nice but sometimes it makes it easier for you. Finally, make sure you are relaxed. I have found that when i try and insert a tampon i feel anxious and therefore am not relaxed. Try putting your foot up on the corner of the bath, I have found this the easiest option. i hope this has answered your question. x

Relax ... relax... relax.......
Try puting a little vasline on the tip of the tampon.

I had the EXACT same thing for a really long time. Here's what i did: I realized that I wasn't aiming it enough towards my butt. Next time just make it pretty much horozontial to the ground. NOT exactly horozontial but just so that the tip of the applicator faces up a little bit. Work with that and see how exactly it fits into your vagina, because my guess is that if you aim it more towards your butt, everything will be fine. Well, that's what I did and I'm fine now :)! Hope this helps, hun

i would use ones with a plastic applicator.

Just use pads. It just isn't healthy to insert something into yourself to collect waste products. Anytime I've used tampons I've ended up with severe lower back pain. I'm not young, I'm actually nearing menopause, and I very seldomly use tampons.
