In general, an epidural is effective although sometimes it only numbs a part of the area and so you are mostly numb but feel everything in one certain area.

You do not have to be afraid of the pain of labor. It starts out not being any worse than getting your period and by the time you could get an epidural -- at 6 or 7 cm -- you will be able to decide if you want one or not.

The epidural works differently on the same woman in each pregnancy and some women have certain conditions that make an epidural more dangerous so check with your doctor as to whether you would have any problems.

The best thing for you to do is to take an experienced birth coach with you that can help and calm you through the entire labor so that you don't have to be afraid of the pain or anything else.

if the "caine" drugs work for you then yes, it's very effective.

I was so nervous and scared when I had to get mine. But I didnt feel a thing, didnt even know they had already put it in. It took away all of my pain thanks god!

Everyone is different. I had my epidural and and I felt absolutely no pain. Some will get the epidural and it will wear off, or they still feel some kind of pain. So for me it was effective, for you it might not be.

It varies from woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy. Usually, by the time you're ready to be administered the epidural, is the time when you really start to feel the pain/pressure.

In the end, you decide, no one else. So, don't be afraid. Just concentrate on a having a healthy and progressive delivery.

I had an epidural almost 20 years ago... I felt nothing from the waist down, I couldn't move and couldn't push either!! Don't know how they've changed but as far as pain relief goes, I think its probably the most effective!!! My other 2 kids came too quickly for any pain relief at all!! lol xx

An epidural is very effective in eliminating pain - it makes you totally numb. Well mine did and I had it for 3 days along with other pain meds in a drip.

I have never been pregnant, so I can't tell you about that, however I have had the most painful uterine contractions from another scource -if you are offered an epidural take it.

From a mans point of view, my wife had our first without the epidural. We were in Europe and they gave her laughing gas. She was in real, real pain. Next 2 childremn with Epidural. Much lower key experience, almost to the point that you think there should be more fireworks to mark such a momentous moment.

there is no pain with dilating unless you are in labor, you can be 1-3 cm dilated without labor. I had both of my boys c-section, the epidural is very useful, it takes effect right away and well you are basicly paralized from the waste down temporaily. When you get the epidural it does somewhat pinch when the stick the needle in your back but trust me it is bearable compared to labor. Hope this is helpful

The epidermal is the best thing they ever invented! It eases the pain tremendously.Having a child is going to be a very painful experience but, once they get that baby out.whoa! What a relief. The epidermal itself is just like a little pinch and stinging in you spine, It's just the thought of the needle going inyour spine is enough to freak you out But when you feel those contractions, you'll be glad to get it.Just relax and breath while the are administering the epidermal and DON'T move! I'm sure they will help you.The nursing staff will let you know how to make it more comfortable. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And congrats
