I live in england, and it's use here other than by Police is illegal :(
However, i feel that being able to carry pepper spray around with me would be beneficial to me if i got into any problems with men (as women occasionally do).
I guess the use of it can be abused though. I think the best thing to do is avoid situations where you could have problems, e.g. Walking home on your own late at night.
Pepper spray would certainly stop people from confronting you and intimidating you. I do believe it is a misdemeanor if you use pepper spray wrongfully.
I think you also have to show proof that you have taken a class on how to use it too.
If you are in your own home or inside your car, there are advantages to using pepper spray.
If you are out in public and someone gets you from behind, you won't be able to use it or get to it if your arms or hands can not be used. Fumbling in your purse or pocket would be a disadvantage to you.
If you walked with someone else, their would be an advantage if your friend had pepper spray too.
In a self-defense class, they taught you could use your keys and jab in the eye. That will you give you some time to run to a safe point.
Don't go out at night time unless you really have too.
Do your shopping early in the morning instead of late of night.
Go to the movies during the early shows of the day instead of the night time shows.
Turn your porch light on as the sun goes down.
If you have children that play in the front yard, sit outside your porch and watch them with the other parents. The backyard is safer though.
This may help keep you safe.
