Physicial....?!

Question: What do the doctors do at physicals?

Answers: What do the doctors do at physicals?

they check everything....it's totally painless.

they'll check your eyes, ears, throat. then he/she will probably press around on your neck, just below your jaw - this is to check your lymph nodes to make sure they aren't swollen. then he/she will listen to your heart and lung sounds with their stethescope. when he's listening to your lungs, he/she will listen to them on your back and have you breath in deep four times - it sounds like breezy air, lol. then you'll probably lay down on your back so that the doctor can feel around on your abdomen - he/she will push down just underneath your ribs on the right and left side to make sure that the liver (on the right side of your body) and your spleen (on the left side of your body) are in the right spot and not swollen or inflammed. the doctor may also tap on your abdomen where your liver and spleen are supposed to be - it should make a certain sound if everything is normal. after the doctor is done checking your liver and spleen he/she will use the stethescope again to listen to your intestines to make sure that everything is moving along the way it's supposed to and nothing is getting blocked (it sounds like water running through pipes, lol). after that, depending on your age (depends what stage of puberty) the doctor may ask you to tuck your knees to you chest and lay on your back so that he can check your vagina - don't worry, it's not like a gyno appt, just making sure there's no trauma, it's just a quick 2 second look and it's over - and you'll probably get a breast exam to make sure there are no lumps - it's never to early to start checking and it's totally painless, kinda feels like a weird massage. after all of that, the doctor will tap your knees to check your reflexes, then tap your ankles to check those reflexes, maybe your elbows, and you're all done!
sounds like a LOT, right? it actually doesn't take that long - maybe 10 minutes. the only type of pain you will have is if you need to get some shots to update your immunizations, but again, your age will determine that and your shot records on file will let the doctor know. you probably won't, but just letting you know that there is a possibility. the doctor will probably also ask you questions about your family medical history and if you don't know then he/she can always ask one of your parents. physicals are no big deal, just a general check up to make sure you're healthy! it's NOTHING to worry about. if you have any more questions, feel free to email me! hope this helps!!!

Are you referring to a pediatrician or a general practitioner? When I was 16 and needed a physical for my first job, I went to my pediatrician. During the exam, they checked my height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and they also did a urinalysis. They did also check my genital area to make sure everything was ok. It wasn't a full gyno exam, just a check to make sure everything appeared normal. The doctor didn't ask if I was sexually active, which I'm guessing was because my mom was in the room. Some doctors order blood work-ups too to check cholesterol and things like that. Don't stress out over it!
