How sad that your Mom won't give you basic information about your body.

Here's some basics:

Your menstrual cycle will be between 24 and 35 days. And because you are young, it may not be the same from month to month. That's normal. The day you start your period counts as day one for calculating when your next period will start.

Example: If your period starts on 04/10/08 and your cycle is every 27 days, then 04/10 is day one. This means your next period should start on 05/06.

Your period will last around 5 days (sometimes less, sometimes more). You may have heavier flow in the beginning and lighter flow at the end. The blood may be dark red, light red, or even brownish red. All normal. You may some blood clots (like Jello), which are normal unless you have them all of the time, every day.

Wear pads to start with. They make ULTRA THIN ones that are very absorbent. You won't know you are wearing them.

When (if) you are ready to wear tampons, select the smallest (TEEN or SLENDER) size to start. NEVER wear a tampon overnight.

Change your pad or tampon every 2-3 hours or so, depending on how heavy your flow is.

You may experience some light pain and discomfort with your period. Your abdomen may cramp. You may bloat. And your breasts may be tender to the touch and a bit swollen. That's all normal. Take Advil or Motrin to relieve symptoms. Exercise is a great reliever of pain.

You can do EVERYTHING you used to do before you got your period. However, if you swim during your period you MUST wear a tampon.

First, you'll want to tell your mum :) She can help you decide on what method of dealing with your period you want to use.

For example, you might want to use sanitary towels which are usually better for young girls as they don't take any knowhow.
With sanitary towels, you will need to change them at least every 6 hours, however, they do have a tendancy to smell a little....so you may want to change it sooner.

The other option is Tampons.
Tampons are what i use, i'm 18, and i started using them about 4 months ago having used pads since i was 14.
I prefer tampons because they don't have some of the problems i had associated with pads, such as the smell, and they tend to be a little more hygeinic because the blood is absorbed into the tampon inside you.
Tampons can be a little hard to insert until you get the hang of it, and you would want to start off with a small tampon (like a tampax lite) first, in order to get used to inserting them.

The tampons usually come with instructions so you can learn how to insert them properly.

If you can feel a tampon hurting you, it is not inserted properly. Once you've worn tampons for long enough, you won't even notice they are there. Tampons can be worn over night, but need to be replaced as soon as you wake up.
They need to be changed about every 6 hours.

As for your periods,

They will probably last about 7 days each time at first, but you will find that the longer you have your periods, the less time your periods last for.
You will probably experience pain with your periods, but if they are very painful, just take one aspirin and that'll do the trick!

You got it in January and haven't told your mom? How have you been able to keep this a secret?

You really should tell your mom. There's nothing wrong with telling her. Seeing as you do officially have it, she'll probably tell you lots of things. If she doesn't, then that's awful really.

Try asking her first before asking strangers, 'cause I mean these kind of things I wanted learn from my mom. Don't you?

Aw, don't be shy about telling your mum about it. But I'll list a few tips for you, anyway. :]

1. If you're a vegetarian, make sure that you take in a healthy amount of iron. I used to be a vegetarian and I'd always have heavy flows. Gradually, the loss of blood made me anemic. :[

2. If you ever have a jello-like blood clot, they are normal.

3. If it appears dark-brown sometimes, that is normal.

4. Keep pain relievers at hand in case you have really bad cramps.

5. Keeping a hot water bottle helps for cramps, too.

6. Don't go into the pool while on your period.

7. Don't wear light clothing while on your period.

8. Change pads or tampons regularly.

9. It's normal for your period to be irregular for the first couple of years.

10. Start off with the really thin pads. It feels like they're not there.

11. If you want to try tampons, try the small ones. Also, if it feels hurtful, you've inserted it wrong.

12. Take care of yourself! :]

I would go and tell your Mom about it cos she will be able to help with buying things like Period pads or tampons. You will sometimes get pains, it can hurt but it is different for different people. But periods kind of sorts out a routine to the females around you, so in your case your Mom or sister and you will find that when you "come on" soon after or before your family or friends will start theirs too. There are general things that everyone gets such as mood swings and crying for no apparent reason but they carry on for up to a week and then there are gaps between each time you have one, these can be up to a month. But yeah, I would tell your Mom and let her know otherwise she's just gonna find out when she does the washing!
Hope that helps!. (:

if all this advice dose not help you should have a school nurse and she will advice you as this is part of their role

well this is a perfect thing i just started yesterday anfd io said to my mum i have something brown on my knickers can you wash them even though i knew perfectly well what it was you can lie and trick like that or you can say mum i think i started my periods but my mums tottslly likr yours shes never talks about that stuff
