It's different for everyone. Some women's hymens break when they're playing sport, fall over are riding horse etc. It was very rare before the 20th Century as women weren't active but now about 50% of women don't bleed when they lose their virginity. The pain depends on how you're built as well, some women have told me they actually couldn't tell if there was anything inside them their first time and others have experienced pain. It is a natural thing for people to do so it isn't designed to be an excruciating experience- don't be scared. You will be in control as well, you can say yes, no, stop, slow down, be on top, on the bottom, whatever suits you to make you feel comfortable!
It is much bigger step for a woman to lose her virginity than a man, for a start she's not largely sexually driven, secondly it's her body being entered and thirdly there's a risk of pregnancy! It's good that he's respecting your wishes. When you decide you are ready- try and be on the pill and use a condom that way if anything goes wrong you're still safe from pregnancy!

When you decided to have sex; for you to be on top this way you can slowly lower yourself on top of him, & can go at your pace. plus make sure you have some form of lubrication too.
