Endometriosis? At 21? Pregnancy? A few random questions..... some answers please!

Question: I intend to schedule a OB/GYN appt., but it'll take forever for me to see my doctor... I'd just like some opinions/answers to a few questions.

I've been worrying myself sick over the past few days about pregnancy. The chances are so unlikely - we use condoms every time (no ruptures), I chart my cycle and avoid highly fertile days (to the best of my knowledge) and most importantly, my period was on time and normal. I do know, however, that some women do have their periods while pregnant - so I guess my first question, then, is what is the biology behind this event? How does this really occur? Really, this Q is just for peace of mind. I've no real symtoms, I'm just killing myself with worry.

My real question is about endometriosis. What exactly does it feel like, and how is it experienced (I'm 21 btw)? I've noticed that over the past few months that I've been experiencing my menstrual cramps more than a week early, sometimes for 8 or 9 days before due...

Dear God girl, you've got to relax! The burning pain in your abdomen is probably acid reflux or something from all the stressing you're doing! And if you keep worrying like this then you could delay your period, which will probably give you a minor heart attack! First off, does endimetriosis run in your family? If so then the chances of you getting it are slightly higher as it is hereditry. The most common signs are extremely heavy and painful periods. It does not neccesarily cause infertility as it's fairly easy to treat if caught early enough. If you are at high risk of getting it your doctor will keep an eye on you with regular tests and scans. I am deemed as high risk as my mother, two aunts and two cousins all suffer from it, my mum and aunt actually had to get hysterectomies, but this was after having kids. My doctor told me that the easiest way of preventing/treating it was birth control, in my case Implanon, as this stops me from getting my period, ergo no lining can build up on my uterus. Also, if you get yourself on some sort of birth control, you may be able to stop worrying so much about getting pregnant. I think you should mention all these worries and stresses you have to your doctor, it could help if you spoke to someone about it. Feeling so highly strung and neurotic can't be good for you. Your doctor will be able to help you out with your worries about endemetriosis and decide if any further steps need to be taken. Good luck with everything, I hope you feel better and more relaxed soon. x

Endometriosis symptoms vary from person to person. Sometime the only way a woman finds out is because she's experiencing infertility. I myself have had endo since I was about 16, officially diagnosed at 20. At first I just had really horrible cramps during my period ONLY. Then it started that I'd get them a week before, and then eventually it got to the point where it was a good week if I wasn't cramping for 3 days. They did a laparoscopy, burned off the endo, and a year later, I was started on continuous birth control. It's helped, although I'm starting to get more pain again, so it might be time for lap #2. If you're looking for endo information, here are some sites I recommend.

And on a final note, don't let anyone tell you endo can be diagnosed for sure other than a laparoscopy. It's the only sure way.
